If I kneel a card to pay influence cost, can I still use the card abilities? The FAQ state that "paying a cost with influence is not considered triggering an effect". Can I trigger it and make that killer combo? Or do I have to choose between the two options?

If you think about triggering ability of Northern Fiefdoms for example, while paying influence for different effect, then it's impossible. You cannot trigger an effect, inside another effect you are currently triggering.
It was Summer Sea (discard to reduce character cost) .
I used it's influence to pay for Xaro's Home (kneel 1 influence to draw a card). Then I taught, I'll discard my kneeled Summer Sea to reduce the cost of that character I just draw. Mouhahahaha.

So the question here is more about how to pay costs than it is about card abilities in general.
Killer combo it is!
Good to know that you can trigger the ability of a card even if it's kneeled.
