Strength Stat for Devastator Marine?

By Hehateme, in Deathwatch

Hey all,

I have a question: I noticed that the Str stat is real cheap for Devs to improve via advancement. However, I can't really find any real mechanical reason why a Dev would need high Strength. Can you guys give me some reasons why a high Str would be important for a Dev Marine?

Thanks all!

Mechanically, Strength isn't a huge benefit for the Dev compared to other Specialties since he wants to stay out of melee, which is where Strength's biggest benefit is. There are several reasons why a Dev might have fairly high Strength, though.

  1. Lugging around huge guns all day is a quick way to build some muscles.
  2. Since he wants to stay out of melee, a high Strength lets the Dev throw weapons farther - grenades, chunks of debris, his fellow Battle-Brothers...
  3. A high Strength allows him to be effective if anything gets close and grapples him.

Seriously, though, probably the biggest benefit is an increase in the range of thrown weapons like grenades. A little extra damage if he lands a melee attack is always nice, too.

That's about what I thought. Thanks Brand, much appreciated!

It's not important. You won't use it.

...unless you're an unkind Space Wolf Devastator with Counter Attack, Flesh Tearer and Stalwart Defence at low levels with a chainsword.

The combo of Doom is of course Space Wolf with Counter-attack and Stalwart Defence.

It's largely thematic thing. considering that the Dev's job is to consistently haul around these massive guns. Moreso than the already large bolters, even heavy bolters likely mass somewhere around the weight of a Rhino's rear ramp.

It also helps with climbing should some ledge prove itself a good firing point.

Personally, I would say that after Ballistic Skill, a Devastator really needs to stack wounds and toughness. Unlike the Assault Marine, who is the other big fat target by virtue of his damage output and is blessed with extreme amounts of avoidance (high Ws and high Ag), a Devastator effectively is left blocking punches/acid/energy bolts with his face. In addition, mobs when faced with a Devastator who had just mown down half their number or an Assault Marine moving towards them, often tend to focus on the Devastator...

Nah, always nuke the clothy....errr, Librarian first lengua.gif

Strength is always useful, nothing comes as more a a surprise than fighting your way threw a hail of heavy bolter fire to rasie your blade and then be smashed in the face with the barrel of a heavy bolter which then... un ceromoniously opens fire at point blank range. No enemy is gonna expect a devestator to be adept at close combat so a high strength is always gonna be a good thing, and what if the devestator wants to try his hand as a chaplain?
