Thief vs Random

By Caprozzi, in Talisman Rules Questions

Hello everyone, this is my first post here.

I've been lurking for months looking for answers and homebrews, but now I have a question for you Talisman fans.

What happens if the Thief steals an item from another player, and then he is toadified by the Random spell?

Does he still take the item (and leave it on the ground) or the Random has effect before his stealing?

I think that he takes the object because the Random doesn't prevent the encounter, but this thing ruined my last game, so I want to know how you guys do in this case.

p.s. this question may apply also to the Merchant and (regarding the followers) to the Vampiress and Enchantress.

Clarification:

The Thief lands on the same space as another character and declares that he wishes to steal Solomon's Crown from him. The other player decides to cast his Random Spell on the Thief (may be cast at anytime) and he is turned into a Toad for 3 turns, before he is able to take Solomon's Crown from the player. The Thief/Toad's turn then immediately ends, as he attempted to use an ability against the other player! If the Random Spell had been cast after the Thief had already taken Solomon's Crown, the Thief would have had to ditch it on the space along with the rest of his items.
