Again a quick newbie question.

I have some timing issues with Crane & Valar.

If my opponent plays Valar and Crane would die, can my Lord characters still use his ability to save themselves from Valar?

Yes. You need to read about moribund concept in FAQ. Cards that are killed stay on table until the end of action window and continue to interact with the game.
