New player's question about season

By ktei2008, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hi, I'm wondering the following scenario:

Say if I kneel an attachment (for example, some crown) to make the season as winter, while my opponent kneel his attachment to make it summer, then what's the season? Do we share only one season or we have our own seasons, or, the season is decided by other ways like initiative value, etc... ?

Thank you very much.

then what's the season?

It's summer and winter at the same time.

Thank you for your help. Really appreciate it.

I'm sorry but I don't agree with this. I've not seen anything to support that both seasons can exist at the same time, though truth be told I've never ran into a situation where anything other than a raven changed the seasons.

Remember that the whole season thing is entirely driven by card effects. It doesn't say anywhere in the rules that if it is "Summer," it automatically is "not Winter," too. You'd need the card that says "it is summer" to also say "and it cannot be winter." None of them do. The only reason the "two seasons at the same time" situation never comes up with the Ravens is because each one discards all others when it is played.

But consider the following two cards:

Crown of Winter (Stark Attachment)
(Stark) unique character only.
Attached character gets +2 STR and is immune to opponent's events and character abilities.
If the Black Raven card is not in play, it is Winter.

Crown of Meereen (Targ attachment)
Unique (Targaryen) character only.
If a White Raven card is not in play, it is Summer.
Response: After you win a challenge in which attached character participated, choose an attachment. Take control of that attachment, and attach it to an eligible card of your choice.

So, imagine that both of those cards are out when there are no Ravens. Is there anything about the text of Crown of Winter, or anywhere in the rules, that stops the effect on Crown of Meereen from making it Summer? Is there anything about the text of Crown of Meereen, or the rules, that stops the effect on Crown of Winter from making it Winter? In the absence of anything making the card effects not work, they both work and it is Summer and Winter at the same time.

In this game, you can't do something unless a rule or a card effect allows you to. So the argument isn't "I haven't seen anything that supports that both seasons can exist at the same time." It is "I haven't seen anything that allows me to ignore the 'summer' card effect because a 'winter' card effect is active, or vice versa."
