Promoting "Dust Tactics" and you...

By johnwiser, in Dust Tactics

I would like to know just how different FFG is treating "Dust Tactics" to any of their other games? We keep hearing about how FFG is not promoting "Dust Tactics" but yet I ask you, how is this any different then the other games FFG brings to our tables?

If you wanted to know about a FFG game the place to go was to their website (and funny how it works but it is still true today). While I may not have heard about this game or that game when I ask who it is by and I hear FFG, I know where to go and know that FFG is a company that backs their product. I can tell you that every time I have had missing parts or pieces all I had to do was call or e-mail FFG and this matter was taken care of (every time without ANY problem of any kind). What does this have to do with the price of eggs in China? Name recognition. As a matter of fact I am at ease when I purchase a new game that is put out by FFG just for the fact that I know they will take care of these types of problems with no hassle. Am I saying other game companies do not do this? Not at all. But seeing as I own a lot of FFG games I can say that I know FFG does this and besides, FFG has Thadd : )

From what I have seen FFG does most of their promotion of their games through game stores and...wait for it...wait for it...their own website (which can be found at...er, wait, if you are reading this then you are already here). FFG also makes their presents know at one of (if not the largest) board game conventions in that of GenCon (which I will be attenting for my first time this year). While some will say not everyone goes to GenCon I say but how many people hear about what fun games they either saw or picked up from said event? Which will take me into my next way that FFG promotes their games which is that by...

Word of mouth. This is the age where we are able to jump online and hear about almost anything we wish to hear about. And this does not exclude board games (board game geek is just one example of a GREAT website dedicated to nothing but board games). Want to know the good, the bad, and the ugly of any said game? Jump online and let your fingers do the walking. But wait, there is nothing about said game that just came out? Guess what? You, yes you, can make a post and tell the world what you think of said game (and even if you are not the first you still can inform the peeps just what you think of said game).

So what do you say, `lil soldier? Are you in this for long haul? Are you ready to let others know about this great game called "Dust Tactics"? I know I am and more than happy to talk to anyone about it and if I can, set up a game for them to see and play for themselves. "Dust Tactics" is one of those games that will draw people in just because of the miniatures and once you have them hooked, you can slowly wind them in (just as FFG has done with us...LOL). So there you have it, `lil soldier, promote "Dust Tactics", keep your head down, and keep fighting the good fight!

amen brother. i first heard of Dust when AT43 was still around, because the first idea was to make them seperate systems but compatable. i then followed it after Rackhams demise. I will say it was very anticipated as a pre release core set at last years Gencon, and table top gaming news has backed it very well. the last 6 months they have used their giant left banner to promote Dust. They have a Facebook 'group', not just a 'like' page that Olivier runs. I think the only small obstacle it faces is its misnomer of being classified as a boardgame, which it really is not. The other is I wish FFG would work more alongside Dust Games in development. There is no reason we shouldnt be able to use Barking Dog, Jag, and Otto in an official setting.

The fact is that DT is not promoted at all. I come from a wargame background in the UK, until recently I'd never even heard of (or rather recognise) FFG, never seen the website and I didn't even see it displayed or anyone selling it at the largest wargames show in the UK. There is huge potential to sell this game to the UK tabletop wargamer and FFG are missing out big time.

There isn´t a big market over here in Germany for WW2 Games (even FoW, Secrets of the third Reich or AE-WW2 aren´t as big as in other countries), but many people I know are just starting with the game. Most people are aware of it because Duncan Idaho and me are promoting for it (mostly Duncan ^^). But I don´t know anybody starting the game because of any promotion from FFG.

Although I have to confess FFG isn´t really promoting anything here... as far as I know.

Ive been following Dust since well before AT43 evolved and spun off from it. When it first came out it was just a bunch off cool concepts and artwork with the occasional Limited Edition Toyset but they always intended to make it into a game from day one. Here in the states there is enough promoting...more so than most other mini games besides GW, FOW, and PP anyway. As far as overseas I dont know but here in the states FFG is stocked fairly well in most game stores that I have been to. As the game expands and the tabletop rules come out Im fairly sure that there will be even more. The release schedule has been fairly constant and easy to get. If people want it to expand even more take your set down to a local shop if you have one and play it. Ive always found that if you play it they will come...even with the internet word of mouth and seeing it always helps.

i wana say amen, and Hell yeah.

I first say some of the dust models years ago.. i was trying to get/find them to loot for an ork army...go figer. But then i ran into it just as at-4 was dieing. ( which i regret not geting more of those models) but. then some real gamers i respect at the local game store started playing a leage..i was hooked.. i jumped in.. and havent regreted it yet.

as for sporting it... i tell almost every gamer i know about this game.. and so far have goten 4 others into it.. Now if they would just show up to dust night at the store...

WHAT i do want.... more terrain!

That´s absolutely true!

Major, Correct me if I am wrong but I do not think FFG has a location in the UK (at least as we speak). This takes me back to the whole internet thing as a company can tell you about their product and keep you updated about said product all the while keeping the cost down (which in turn will take that money and make more games that we enjoy). I am for sure there are games that you see a lot more of because they were made in the UK that we here in the US have yet to hear about. This is the nature of the beast and while we may not like it, this is how it is and until companies change it, this is how it will be (this is the short version of it as there is more but I will not go into it, makes for a dry read).

Another thing about the promotion of board games is that games such as "Dust Tactics" is what is called a hobby game. I heard this on a podcast and fully agree in that a hobby game (for the most part) will not be seen at stores such as Walmart or Target (here in the US) as this is not the market to sell such a game. A hobby game is sold at a game shop and/or comic shop as this is where you will find such clinetal. In retail this is called a destination store as one goes to such a place because they know where to find said item. Which is why here in the US a company such as FFG understands that these such stores are their front line for sells and at times a way to keep customers informed about said game(s). With all of these things in place it is still hard to find a good game store here in the US but that is another story for another time. Which is why I am happy we have the internet and that game companies such as FFG keep us updated on their products.

I do not know about how things are in the UK but from what I have seen here in the US a lot of game stores run into the problem of having to much product (and most deal with other products such as comics) that they only have time to tell you about what is selling the most or played in their store a lot. Not always a bad thing but around my area "Dust Tactics" has yet to catch on so the gaming stores in my area really do not promote it as they know very little about it besides what they read (which is fine but it really hepls to play a game to see how easy it is or just how deep it may be). This is where the lines get blurred and people start asking as to why FFG is not promoting "Dust Tactics"? Why is it that most game stores know very little about this game besides that it is sitting over on their shelf right by (incert game name here)? "Dust Tactics" must not be doing well IF my game store is not playing it, selling it, or promoting it, thoughts shared here in these forums. Which I say is the furthurest from the truth as FFG is doing a stand up job of promoting "Dust Tactics". While you may disagree with me and I fully respect that, look at how not only FFG promotes their games but also other companies as well. As for why "Dust Tactics" is not being showcased at your wargaming convention in the UK, I think this has more to do with FFG not having a location in the UK then anything else. On that note I am sure that a lot of the wargames you see promoted at your conventions in the UK will not be at GenCon either...just the nature of the beast (and business). I know I am happy with "Dust Tactics" and from what I read I would say you are as well (otherwise you would not voice your concerns). Just remember that at the end of the day it all about having fun as this is what a good game will bring to the table. Will "Dust Tactics" be around for another 4-5 years? That is not for me to decide but what I can tell you is this, bring on more "Dust Tactics" as I am enjoying everything I have seen (and purchased) so far!

P.S.

Don`t forget to tell your friends and promote "Dust Tactics" yourself. Bust out a game at your local hang out and watch the people gather. Remember `lil soldier, it is not about how many times they knock you down but how many times you get back up!
