Base game - hard to lose?

It doesn't matter if the general store closes. It's very rare that you *need* something from there. Stuff there's all just cheesecake as far as I'm concerned. Money is almost always better spent looking for unique items.

Which goes back to my second thoughts on the necessity of a weapon - it's nice sometimes to have a little "insurance" in a cold, unforgiving world being over-run by nightmarish terrors.

Unique weapons are nice and all (and more useful) but tend to have a higher cost as well.

But I get the King in Yellow/Elder Sign Shopping.

Well I spent way too much money and am getting a few of the expansions mailed to me. It's almost impossible to find a store that sells the games directly here in Australia sad.gif

I'm really looking forward to playing with at least one expansion. Not because I particularly enjoy losing, but the threat of losing definitely adds spice to the overall game. It does however sound to me from some comments that 4 players is the sweet spot for making the game as easy as possible. Is that a fair comment?

Nooo... But four investigators is an easy way of making the game semi-easy. Personally I think 7 and 8 investigator teams are extremely easy to win with, but they require more complex strategy to keep from getting overwhelmed by the gate limit.

Technically 1-2 investigator games are also extremely easy, if you're willing to count final combat victories as wins ;'D

Thanks! I didn't find them but I did find Paradise Games. Between them & Amazon I think I can get pretty much everything I need.

Cash trophies for Clues at Science Building, don't waste them on Deputy, Blessing, Allies, etc.

I disagree.

Trophies can be turned into Clues at the Science Building and used for Gate Sealing. However many of the other spends aren't that bad either. If your combat character has kept the streets safe, praying for the Gate Runners to give them a better chance of making it through the Outer Worlds and sealing those remaining gates is a perfectly legitimate strategy.

Several allies can help with clue collection: Professor Rice and Anna Kaslow spring to mind, whereas any Ally that improves your Fight / Lore will help seal gates. The monster slayer also benefits strongly from the Messenger. The Deputy can help pass a monster roadblock, money from the Docks may be necessary to quickly heal or get to another town.

On a general note of strategy your first move should be to convene in the General Store, or, if you can't get there, grab a clue token en route to the General Store. This allows you to quickly share out items and get cash onto the shopper (who should later become the monster slayer).

Don't use roles. Every investigator is a jack-of-all-trades for me, should seal at least one gate during the game and take care of most of the monster in his way by himself. If a monster is at a street, go around to another, unguarded gate. It isn't rare at all to collect more gate trophies than monster trophies during a game.

Allies also require double the amount of trophies.

99% of the games I've played (104), I've never shopped at the General Store. Curiositie Shoppe or nothing (barring Marie's PS at Ye Olde Magic Shoppe).

I would never get Anna Kaslow... Not a good use of resources in my opinion... I usually get Rice though. William Bain's actually another good ally that I forgot to mention earlier.

I agree with Dam, I almost never shop at the General Store or the Magic Shoppe unless I'm *really* confident that I'm going to win, or for some reason the terror is over 6 (almost never without custom content). I would never congregate in the general store. Pretty much the only time I'd send someone there was if my starting investigators were absolutely loaded with cash, one of them doesn't have enough speed to make it to the curiositie shoppe fast enough, and I thought I might be able to pick up a useful one or two dollar item at the general store... Even then, I'd have serious second thoughts. Actually... I will also shop at the General Store against Y'golonac (much lower chance of running across tomes). And if I'm *absolutely* desperate for a weapon and nearly broke (almost never, I'd sooner take out bank loans).

Another exception to the rule about avoiding the general store is if my investigators are almost all 3 speed investigators. I might go there to try and get lucky with a motorcycle or a map. Even still, I might just try to rush someone to deputization or to a +2 speed ally (which I would prefer, but they're not always available). That can be a more reliable use of time, even if it means closing an early gate without sealing.

Anyway, generally speaking, unless you're RPing, avoid the general store. Yeah, there's some good stuff in there, but it costs time and money to get them, and the good stuff in the unique deck is much better.
