Road to Legend and Monkey

By Jonny WS, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

In a campaign setting, can a transformed hero (a monkey) use a glyph that has already been activated? According to the rules for glyphs in the campaign, the monkey could use the glyph. But this is probably an oversight.

Secondly, can a monkey use any feat cards?

In the AC game, moving to town is functionally a fifth Action (the "Restock" action.) Per the FAQ, pg 5, a monkey cannot declare an Action, and so would not be able to do this.

As with skill cards, I would expect a monkey can use any Feat cards it wants, subject to the caveat that such Feat cards will not allow the monkey to do things he is otherwise prohibited from doing. (ie: a Feat card that grants an extra attack would do nothing for a monkey, but the card could still be played on him anyway.) Don't have any rules support for that, though.

Well, yes it could be seen as an action, but is not defined as one. The wording of both the monkey and AC glyph rules could suggest that a monkey could go to town if it wanted...but in the flavor of the game I would not allow it (and didn't) Has anyone else come across this issue? I asked 3 other people who play Descent and explained the situation and they all came up with the same thing after reading the FAQ and rules. But agreed that it should be against the rules to go to town as a monkey.

As for the feat cards...in the ToI rule book, it states that a hero can always play a feat card as long as there is a triggering condition. And a Transformed hero is still a hero.

Using a glyph (even from dungeon to Tamalir) is still a movement action - this is buried somewhere in the FAQ in an unrelated question. So the monkey is definitely not allowed to do it, although most likely that particular ruling wasn´t completely thought through .

Here it is:

A Mother's Lament (RtL Rumor 8)
Q: Can the cub leave through a glyph, fulfilling the victory
condition?
A: The cub must leave through the portal, as the cub can
not take movement actions.

I do appreciate the reference to another rule in the FAQ, but that particular FAQ entry was part of the VERY first FAQ when Road to Legend was released. It wasn't until the next FAQ update that the rules for Glyphs were made clear. Back then, it was assumed that you had to be beside or on a glyph and then spend a movement point. Which created the needed for the rules on glyphs to be explained in the AC.

I am not disputing that it SHOULD be an illegal move for the monkey to make, just that the rules are poorly handled in this situation, and should be addressed. Maybe an FAQ? Honestly though, how many times has it happened where a monkey is next to a glyph?

I certainly don't dispute that it's poorly worded.

In defense of my previous position, moving to town is done in lieu of declaring an actual action. Also I'm pretty sure the rules refer to Visit, Restock and Train as "actions" as well. A different type of action, perhaps. The connection is only implicit, but if you're looking for reasons to shut down players who WANT to move their monkey hero through the glyph in AC, it's at least something.

Of course, in my opinion I'd just be inclined to say that the rules from vanilla say he can't go through the glyph and the AC rules don't contradict that. It's still not clear, since the AC rules DO redefine the process of moving through a glyph, but still.
