Hiyas!
Hasbro has it in for FGG:

So, feeling a bit irked right now...
Is imitation is the greatest form of flattery?

Well, honestly, it looks nothing like Runewars, and doesn't look like it even look like it plays similar. It sounds like a mix between Risk and Battlemasters more than anything, maybe with some Queens Gambit thrown in.
I'll look at the article more in-depth, but about the only thing it looks like it's "imitating" is that it has a fantasy theme; and really, Runewars isn't the first fantasy-themed conquest game out there either.
I concur with Sigma, this game has nothing substantial in common with Runewars. It has a fantasy theme and it has four factions, that's it. I don't even see any great similarity between these factions and Runewars'. I'm sure there's a human faction in there somewhere, which may even have foot soldiers, archers and possibly even seige engines, but that's pretty generic stuff for fantasy, really. I mean, when was the last time you saw a fantasy setting WITHOUT humans?
The board is not modular.
There's no equivalent to runes that need to be held in territories on the map (which is THE defining mechanic of Runewars, IMHO.)
I didn't see any neutral figures (although it's possible I just missed them.)
It has dungeons to explore (which sounds like something Runewars doesn't have at all.)
I didn't read much in the way of mechanics, but it looks like this game is much more focused on combat. Fighting the enemy and taking their cities will earn you VP. In Runewars, fighting the enemy will only serve to weaken you both unless there's a rune stone involved. Even then it might not be the wisest course of action.
So yeah, there's really nothing here to threaten Runewars or FFG. There's no law against other companies making fantasy themed board games. If anything, people who buy and enjoy this game might find their way to Runewars while looking for other similar concepts. More publicity for this type of game means more publicity for everyone!
I guess I was mistaken.
From a distance it looked like a bad copy of Runewars.
Thanks for the clarifications!

American football is a complete ripoff of real football...
The only thing those two games have in common is that some pieces have square and hexagon bases.

I'm not a sports fan, so forgive me if I've misunderstood something here. I'm assuming that by "real football" you are referring to the sport most North Americans call "soccer." My understanding of the rules for each of these sports leads me to believe the only similarity they share is the name, which makes American football about as much of a rip-off of "real football" as this game is of Runewars. Less so, IMHO.
Were you perhaps trying to support the OP's original claim? If not, I'm afraid your analogy is lost on me.
From the OG (Original Gansta):
Probably,
most likely,
a sarcastic joke.

Well, not to take the thread off on a tangent, but my understanding of American Football's history is that there was a point when American Football was much more "foot" oriented, and has just evolved in a different way than "Soccer". Today they are obviously very different, but I think they used to be much more similar
Hiyas!
I hear that US football ("America" is a continent) split for "real" football in the nineteen century, tho' it looks like a watered-down version of
rugby,
so I don't know.

LOL, well, if you want to get REALLY technical, America is TWO continents ("North" and "South")
And technically, "US" isn't completely accurate, as that just means United States, which is just as incomplete as "America"
It's the full "USA" bit that would make it the most accurate.
But for what it's worth, most people who live here refer to things from the country as "American", not because we think we are all of North America, but just because America is part of our country's name (and thus, used as shorthand).
Not that any of that matters for Runewars, of course
Hi:
To us "America" is just ONE continent, divided in sections (North, South, Central). That's what I got taught at skool, dude!
So, all inhabitants of the American continent are Americans, not just the ones from the USA.
& besides, the USA is just one of a couple of United States (there's the
United
Mexican States too). You gotta choose a less confusin' name for yer country!
The Monroe Doctrine finished f*ckin' up royally everything for everyone else but the USA.
But I digress, I guess

Really? Because I distinctly remember being taught that there were 7 continents; North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and Antarctica. Were you taught that there were only 6? Is this another one of those "Pluto is not a planet" things?
Maybe we Canadians just count things differently up here.
Hiyas!
Six, seven, five... It was so long ago, before The Accident.
(I believe, if I remember correctly) I was taught that there were "seven continents": America, Africa, Europe, Asia, Oceania, Antartica, Australia.
...Or maybe "six continents": America, Africa, Australia, Antartica, Asia, Europe.
Or, even maybe-er, "five contintents" (I bet this is the one): America Africa, Europe, Asia, Oceania.
But definitely
America
is just one
big beautiful
continent.
& Pluto definitely
was
a planet in my skoolin' jeers...
sigh.
Any-hoo, quite riveting, don't cha think?
L
There were always S
even Seas,
tho'. Not counting the Sea of Dreams!

I suppose Oceania is the official name of the "continent" including Australia and all those little island nations, you're right about that. But that's still only six if the Americas are one.

Actually American football is very much like the original game. In many ways. Soccer however is very little like the orginal 'football' game of Mob football. Mob Football incidentally had very little kicking of the ball...... Look it up :-)

"America" not "Americas", my young apprentice...
Some peeps count less, some count more. I got taught 5 was the magick number.

In my school they taught me there were 6 but Americas count as 2

I don't think I care to put that much effort into my random sarcasm.
How can you count North and South America as one "big" continent, but then not count Europe and Asia as one big "Eurasia" continent? Europe and Asia are MUCH more connected than North and South America are.
Heck, since N/S America are only connected by a tiny isthmus, why not throw Africa in there to have on gigantic "mega-continent"
Eurafrisia or something.
Strictly speaking, there would really only be 4 "Continents" in the strictest sense: America (combined N/S), Eurafrisia (Europe/Africa/Asia), Australia, and Antarctica. Maybe for good measure you could throw Greenland in there as a new continent or something
Anyway, how to tie this into Runewars... Hmmm...

as a friend of mine pointed out (he hates sports) american football plays a lot like chess. And i actually agree, majority of the game is how you set your pieces up and size your opponent and the other half is how good they move. Guess american football takes a lot of flak since everyone in the world likes soccer and rugby players dont use protection, and the rest of the world is a lot more close minded than they admit they are.I hate being a sport spectator and i favor no country or sport "just because" but i think football is a brilliant game.
Back to conquest of nerath. Nothing but good reviews. I want to get it bc it seems simple and fun. Too bad WOTC dropped the ball on half the figures look the same and no art on any cards. not even treasure cards.

That seems like a fair assessment to me. I actually referee high school football around here, and that's a lot of what I like about it. It's a nice mix between strategy and tactics; planning and execution. It's a different mix of those things than in most other sports. Yes, other sports have those things, but in a different blend, and I think the blend is what I enjoy.
To briefly respond to the original post.
I played Nerath and it really is just a variation of Axis and Allies. Far closer to Risk than Runewars.
Runewars is much more strategic, nicer to look at, and just plain more fun.
Nerath is more like a stepping stone to Runewars.
Was this thread once about
Conquest of Nerath?
I seem to remember something to that effect.

havent played either game.
But seems Nerath fun can be found in the simplicity as well

Conquest of Nerath is FFG-ese for "Football".
