End of Mythos Phase Questions

By The Professor, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Arkhamites,

Here are two question from my current game:

1. The Mythos card Aldeberan Ascendant Environment (Mystic) is in play. There's a flying creature in a Dunwich Location Part of this Mythos card states, "Flying creatures do not move to the Sky. During the next Mythos Phase, the card has a "circle" (the same dimensional symbol as the aforementioned flying creature in the Dunwich Location) move on black. So, does the creature not move to the streets and subsequently not move to the Sky, as the previous Mythos card is in effect until the end of this round, or does the new card take effect, and the Dunwich Location creature would in fact move to the street, and then to the Sky?

2. While attempting to reduce the effect of a Rumor, Caroline Fern is in the Uptown Streets at the end of the Mythos Phase...two things happen, the Nightgaunt in the Sky will descend upon Caroline, and Caroline, with only 1 Stamina will go Unconscious as Ithaqua is the GOO. Does Caroline go Unconconscious before the Nightgaunt moves to the Street...which would obviate the need to move the Nightgaunt, as Caroline's limp body has already been transported to St. Mary's? OR Does the Nightgaunt move to the street and then Caroline goes Unconscious, leaving the Nightgaunt in the Uptown Street?

2. The Nightgaunt would move to the same street location as Caroline before she took the 1 stamina loss from Ithaqua as his ability only occurs at the end of the Mythos phase.

Thanks, arkhamresident, that's how I played it. In the end, Caroline stayed at St. Mary's for a turn and during the next Mythos Phase, the ol' Nightgaunt moved back to the Sky.

For the first one i'll try an answer :

- 1 Gate opening

- 2 Clue summoning

- 3 Monster movement

- 4 Headlines / Switch environment

So, i would say that during the monster movement step, we are still with the ingame environment and not yet with the one drawn. But not sure at all.

Hughes,

I tend to agree with your assessment/opinion/interpretation.

Thanks!

The order can be found on p 9 of the AH rule book:

1. Open Gate and Spawn Monster

2. Place Clue Token

3. Move Monsters

4. Activate Mythos Ability

Musha Shukou,

I appreciate the response and believe me, after two and a half years of play, the rules are worn pages by now. Specifically, I was looking for answers to the very nuanced questions not covered by the linear description for The End of the Mythos Phase, as "when does the GOOs ability activate vis-a-vis the aforementioned linear description...?" Between 1. and 2., 2. and 3., you get it.

Ah, I see. In that case, I agree with Hughes above. Since the mythos ability doesn't activate until step 4, steps 1 - 3 would still be affected by the previous environment.

Woah wait a sec. Does that mean that monsters can move the first turn they come out (symbol matching, of course)?

If so, I've been playing this wrong the whole time! (Not that that's particularly uncommon with a game this complex - already found out I've been wrong before!)

Yep, it means exactly that. Monsters can move the turn they arrive in play.

Musha,

Yes, as to the one question, I'm in Hughes' camp...as to the special ability of the GOO...

That is correct. Monsters that come in through gates would move if their dimensional symbol appears on the mythos card that caused them to spawn. Monsters appearing as a result of the mythos ability, however, would not move. (eg- Mythos that says two monsters are released into the Uptown Streets would not move since they are spawned after the monster movement step).

Ithaqua's ability says that any investigators in the streets at the end of the Mythos phase lose 1 Stamina. In other words, once the Mythos phase is over and done with, but before starting the upkeep of the next turn, activate Ithaqua's ability. So, draw the Mythos card, do steps 1-4 (unless it is an environment, in which case you only do steps 1-3) and then Ithaqua's Icy Winds hurt the investigators as the very last thing. So, yes, this would mean the Nightgaunt moves to the street where Caroline is and stays there as she goes unconscious.

Alternatively, you could just add a 5th step to the order with step #5 being- Activate all end of Mythos phase abilities. This would include Ithaqua's Icy Winds and any Rumor effects. Since both read at the end of the Mythos phase, you would pick which one you do first.

yes, I agree ~ "the end" of the Mythos Phase it is. Thanks!
