Average game length, actually in 3 hours?

By Mauzor, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

So we played Descent several times now, and it takes much much MUCH longer then the 3 hours on the box. Last game we did quest 4 from JitD (vanilla), lets say it took 8 hours. Is this normal or are people just taking too long on their turns? The heroes did clear every room in the dungeon, and tend to kill everything in sight, till time started running out for them. Since eventually the OL got shitloads of threat and could basically play everything he drew.

Last two quests went similar, any thoughts on how to bring down game hours? Its okay to spend a few hours on a game, but this way we can only play it on a saturday to have enough time or leave the board for another day. And not got anywhere close to doing two quests on one day.

Kind regards

I've only played the first quest (about 5 times now) and the longest it took was 4 hours. However, this was mainly because every time a treasure chest was opened, they sat there and spent 10 minutes deciding who was going to get what before taking another turn. REALLY annoying.

We NEVER played a game in less than 3.5/4 hours....

4-6 hours is typical for me and my group. Quest 4 from the base game is particularly long, and I think my group spent around 9 hours on it.

So the game really is longer than advertised, but it should be shorter than 8 hours; you had a pathological case.

With my regular group who know the rules pretty well, the three hours is fair for JitD.

Descent has a learning curve which slows down initial plays.

Actually, with experience, the game time may not go down significantly: aware of all the options and possible plays, the people will take long to think out their turns.

It just depends on the right mentality - some players will fool aound and not think effectively, while others know what they want and what to try to achieve it.

With the Well of Darkness Quests we spend about 7 hours a game. I wish it was shorter, so that we could play multiple games of Descent.

Without the expension we used to play about three games on a saturday (14:00 - 2:00), which averages on 4 hours per quest including setting up.

However, mostly the heroes lost one the quest (sometimes even in round 2 or 3!) and then we replayed that quest with different heroes. So I guess 5 hours is a normal time for JitD if the heroes get to the end of the dungeon.

With WoD we try to really get a move on, ignoring everything that is slow enough to leave behind, but the quests in WoD are just longer.. Last time we were halfway through the quest (in spaces / rooms) within half an hour. But the second half took us over 5 hours! (Quest 4).

Thanks for the insights people, guess we go back in there and try harder!
