One of my investigators was devoured so I yanked another investigator from the deck which turned out to be Michael McGlen. When I was getting all of his chits and cards I noticed that two of the other investigators already had one tommy gun each so there wasn't one left for our gangster friend. Does that mean poor Mr. McGlen goes without his beloved Thompson and gets no compensation?

Huh... That type of situation has never happened to me (and I don't remember anyone ever asking about it before). Interesting. No clue :') Tommy is the gun, Thompson is the Mandy. I can see why he'd be in love with them both though. I mean, who wouldn't be in love with Mandy's reroll skill?
He wouldn't get his Tommygun unfortunately. Although it's not unfair to grant him a "compensation" of a random common item in its place instead of a fixed one.

I'd say compensation was in order, although perhaps the player could choose between a random card or the equivalent in dollars?
We're already in the realm of house-rules, so why not?
Of course, if you're playing with personal stories, he would then fail instantly. Imagine that—McGlen gets nabbed because he doesn't have a gun.
I'd say give Michael the first random Common weapon, and then add $$$ to equal the cost of the Tommy Gun.
There was discussion about this from a couple of years ago. The consensus seemed to be that you would draw a random card from the appropriate deck.

I'd either give him a random common or the Rifle (it's only -1 from the Thompson)
