Maester's Path Agenda

By the1andonlime, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Are the Chains placed on the Maester's Path agenda face up or face down. The agenda does not specify either way, and there is no precedence AFAIK.

The Maester's Path

[Neutral Agenda]

Before shuffling your deck during setup, remove up to 12 Chain attachments with different titles from your deck and place them on The Maester's Path.
You cannot win the game if there are any Chain attachments on this card.
Response: After you win a challenge, attach 1 Chain from this card to a character you control.

I'd say you need to prove that the cards you put on the agenda are indeed chain attachments, and that they do indeed have different titles. To prove that, you have to at least reveal them to your opponent(s). I'm not sure if there's any rule that prevents you from placing them face down on the agenda after you've revealed them. In the few games I've played against Maester decks, they were placed face up on the Agenda, and that's how I would do it intuitively.

You have to show the attachments as you play them from the agenda anyway, so it gets proven sooner or later.

Should be possible to play them face down IMO.

By that reasoning, the cards in your discard and dead pile are all "proven" sooner or later, so why aren't they face-down?

The point is that the Agenda specifies the characteristics of the cards that are attached to it. Therefore, the chain attachments must be shown from the beginning, at which point, they are known (not hidden) information. Since they are known, they should be face-up even though they are not in-play, just like the known cards in your discard or dead piles.

Consider also that no cards are ever used face-down in this game without a specific effect or rule telling you to do so. As such, with the chain attachments being "known" information and the Agenda not saying you can attach them face down, you cannot place them face-down.

I stand corrected :)
