I'm quite new to the game.

One thing came up during a game with a friend.

I had a claim 2 plot and won a military challenge.

He had only one char in play with a lightbringer attachment.

Does the claim effect hit this character twice? In result killing his character after lightbringer is knelt. Or can he choose a character for a claim effect just once.

In the Core Rulebook towards the back under High Claim Millitary Challenges the rules state that "If during a military challenge, the defending player loses a challenge, and the attacking player has a claim of 2 or higher, the defending player must kill the required number of different characters, all at once. Thus, the defender may not choose to kill the same character multiple times, even if that character would be saved"

I haven't found anything in the errata to change this when fewer than 2 players are in play so I assume that means you still cannot choose to kill the same card multiple times and the character would live although lightbringer would remain knelt. If you were to then play an appropriate event card that would kill that character he would be vulerable to death.

Correct. Essentially, to choose a single character twice for the same effect (such as claim), you would have to initiate the effect twice (since choosing characters as targets is part of initiation). Since you cannot go backwards, if an effect allows you to choose "2 characters, if able", but only 1 is available, that's all you get. The bullet doesn't curve around and hit the same guy twice.
