More noob question for yall!!

Sorry im new and I have looked for answers but didnt find any.

1. What are the summer and winter seasons all about, if the answer is too long is there a link to the rules?

2. Whats the shadows all about, I have seriously two core sets and nothing related to shadows is in those rules...noobs pffft.
