Valar Morghulis vs Valar Dohaeris (or Why does it say "Cannot be saved")

By qkershner, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Valar Morghulis reads: "When revealed, kill all characters in play"

Valar Dohaeris reads: "At the end of the Dominance phase, discard all standing characters from play (cannot be saved)."

Here are the questions:

1) Can you discard a duplicate to save a character from VM?

2) Why is "cannot be saved" in parentheses on DM? Shouldn't it just be text?

As a new group of players, we had a long discussion trying to figure out the "why" on VD since it might apply to VM. And can't for the life of us, figure it out.

1) yes

2) Generally that is the templating they use when they want to specify an effect which you cannot save from. Functionally it makes no difference, you just cannot save from it.

Thank you.
