The person i've been teaching to play wants to paint thier germans more steampunk. I kinda like the idea..alot of brass and copper, with darker leather looks, and brass bottons and rivits.

You mean like the ones in the ´League of extraordinary gentleman´ movie? Sounds interesting, I think.
Yeah, go for lots of brass and copper. Look to Warmachine/Iron Kingdoms and their steam-robots for inspiration.
Also you can checkout the mini table top game Dystopian Wars for some steampunk examples.. If you think more of a World War I having never ended it might help generate some ideas. There is also a computer game called "Gettysburg: Armored Warfare" that is a steampunk version of the American Civil War. I hope that helps.
