One "weird" Mythos Card

By player632195, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

I have a kind of problem with that card : http://www.arkhamhorrorwiki.com/Private_Security_Hired_in_Uptown%21

It opens a gate in the Wood and the headlines says "Monster in uptown back to the cup"...

So it means, that the monsters which emerges will go back to the cup unless :

- they went to the outskirts cause of monster limit.

- they are flying monsters with the appropriate symbol (maybe half of them)

- they are fast monsters with the appropriate symbol (in fact, it's all, except Tcho tcho Priest and Goat Spawn)

So, where's the problem ? Well, if it happens, it helps the players... Sounds weird :o)

Cherish what little help you get! There are actually quite a few cards like that in the base Mythos deck (well, relatively).

I think it was an accident.

I think the designers knew they wanted "return all monsters in X neighborhood" for each of the nine neighborhoods, and also "add 2 monsters to X neighborhood streets." But when they paired these effects up with their list of gate locations, they accidentally stuck "Uptown" and "Woods" together and never caught it during testing.

But, as arkhamresident said: take what you can get.

I'm quite sure it's the idea too... In fact, the first time i drew it, I thought there was a mistake. So i checked in the english version, i checked the nine return all and the nine add 2 monster... But somewhere i was not satisfied at all.

But like i said, some monsters can escape, and you can get other monsters too. So, i suppose i'll take it the way it is :)

This is kind of a longshot, and would probably would raise all sorts of issues if it worked, but I suppose it's possible that one could find a loophole in the whole "gates replace their location" thing

I mean I think the pairing on the card was a mistake. Had they known what it would do, I'm sure the designers would have traded out its gate location with one on another card.

Unlikely:

  1. The Woods may be replaced with a gate, but it is still a location, and that location is still part of the Uptown neighborhood.
  2. You could very well argue that since the Woods "doesn't exist," then there would never be monster surges because any Mythos card that depicted the Woods would depict a location that "doesn't exist," so nothing would happen. Since this clearly is not the case, then the term "replaces the location" must be used with extreme caution. I never liked that term anyway.

Yeah, good enough for me

(agreed on the term; horribly sloppy and unclear thing)
