Customizing Armies without Call to Arms expansion

By SolennelBern, in Battlelore

Hey all! I already own Scotish Wars, Dwarf Battalion, Goblin Skirmishers and Goblin Marauders. I also have Epic Battlelore. Tomorrow I'm gonna try my first Epic battle and would like to use the units from the specialists expansions. Each have deployment cards but without Call to Arms, some are less obvious to use.

When a card says: "...and deploy them as reserve", how do you handle them? How does the Reserves work exactly?

I'd really like this battle to use as much Dwarves and Goblins as possible!

Thanks for your help!

The same question here!

Well, we did our first Epic battle yesterday and with the help of the Troll map, it was easy and quick to setup. I played with the Dwarves and my bro with the Goblins.

We used the Cards from Scotish Wars, Dwarven Batalion, Goblin Marauders and Skirmishers to "customize" our armies and it worked great!

Epic battles are awesome but there's so much unit going on that at least 1/3 of them won't get used. I won 7 to 1...i'm proud to say that to this date, i'm undefeated in my play group hahah!

But how can Goblins win against the Dwarves?!!?! I'll try the Goblins in the near future because they look really fun to play with and a completely different approach compared to the Dwarves, which I love!

But all in all, without Call to Arms, we were still able to customize our ranks and add units from the multiple expansions I own and it worked really well at that since most of the cards simply tell you to replace X number of units with Y unit or deploy this new unit in an adjacent hex.

I found a french and new copy of Call to Arms (Aux Armes) for 10 canadian dollars and alreayd ordered a french copy os The Hundred Year War too that I found on german board game site (which is great btw!).

Last time I played Battlelore was 2 months ago and I missed it, one of my favorite game without a doubt!

Hi

But do you know how the reserves exactly work?

How I worked with them is exactly the same as the other cards.

What I did was choose a scenario then place the indicated armies. After that, I used the cards to replace and deploy units. I treated the Reserve ones identically. Simple as that.

Worked great!

If a card says "Add...to the units you deploy as Reserves," as is the case with the Goblin Band, then just place it on any baseline hex without replacing any units (Reserve Units are always placed on the baseline). If it says "Replace one unit deployed as Reserve," then yeah I guess you'd need to replace a unit that is on, or at least close to, your baseline of hexes. That's probably the closest you can get to CtA with house rules and that's the way I play the specialist cards if I want to add them to a ready-made battle.
