Early Report from Chicago Regional

By Maester_LUke, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

I'm sorry to hear about the shenanigans at the regional. I understand what the TO was trying to do, but still, it seems a bit off.

That said, I know Brian (goshdarnstud) and I have chatted at some length about trying to do a "Chicago" regional out in DeKalb next year. Geographically it would be much easier for a lot of the usual suspects (3 hours from Iowa City, 1.5 from downtown Chicago, 2ish hours from Madison, and closer than Chicago proper for Missouri and Bloomington folks) and we know a nice game store out there; lots of space, friendly people, etc.

The only hitch is that they don't sell AGoT products there, except for the board game, but I do know the owner semi-casually (we've played D&D together a number of times) and plan on chatting him up next time I'm out there to see what he thinks.

Thanks for the information/break downs.

By the way, am I correct in reading that participants played the "best of 3 games" in under an hour? How is that even possible? At most, I would think you would hit time during the second game, unless it's Bara rush or something. And if you are stopped mid-game during the second game, the result is the same as the first game anyway, right?

we held the DC regional this year at a place that sold none of the LCG products at the time, and everything turned out just fine -- having no AGOT product on hand turns out not to be a big deal. (NYC holds most of their tournaments at a deli, and it always turns out well; critical hit in iowa, too, had only an outdated chapter pack or two on sale during their regional.)

But "stopped mid-game during the second so the result is the same as the first game anyway" (which ignores FFG's "modified win" rules, btw) isn't really how the results worked out because your record for the event was the number of games won, not the number of rounds. (Not sure if the game record was a tie-break or the actual ranking record, but with a field of 12, it amounts to pretty much the same thing.) So winning a round 1 game to none was not the same as winning it 2 games to none, or even 2 games to 1. The winner of the day was said to have a "7-1" record, not a "4-0." Effectively, you were penalized if your deck did not get through at least 2 games in an hour because a "3-1" match record could correspond to a game record of anywhere between 7-5 and 3-1, with the 7-5 person being ranked higher, regardless of the calibre of opponents.

Again, a perfectly reasonable way to run a tournament - but would have been nice to know before the first-round pairings were being announced.

Never thought I'd say this but.....Shenanigans is right. Plus there are hotels and bars within walking distance. I'm also kicking around the idea of a January "pre-season" tourney of sorts. We'll see how that develops.
