Hi guys do we have a point buy system for dark heresy for stat generation?
Point Buy system for Dark Heresy?
Hi,
no, we dont. At least, if we are speaking about official rules. And I even do not believe that their is a "we" around here...
But "we" can easily steal the one provided in RT
. I´ll even do the fencing for you, so you just need to reach out and....
RT pointbuy system:
Instead of roling dice & adding the value to the "base" provided by the choosen "homeworld", give the pc a total of 100 points
to allocate. They are not allowed to add more then 20 to any given characteristic, whatsoever. And in order to disencourage the min-max-Munchkin in all of
your players,
In addition, I would rule that they do have to apply a minium of 5 points to each attribute. Otherwise, you will be stuck with al lot of INT / FEL 20 combat morons. Which is hardly fun since those types normally feel inclined to ruin any non-combat scene in a game.
Just to elaborate on this, the 100 points in RT's pointbuy option are in addition to a minimum of 25 points that each character would already possess in each stat - for Dark Heresy, this number would be 20, of course.

Well that number wouldnt always be 20, some homeworlds have 25 or 15 as a base for certain stats.

I would instead rule that they have to spend at least 1 point on every trait and not all traits may have 5 or 0 on the second digit.
If you ask why: Because of how the ability bonus system functions and because you increase your traits in steps of 5 later on. So having all traits on 5 or 0 would max out.

I'd say 2 minimum, rather than 1, but that's mainly because that produces the same minimum score as rolling a character, and I don't believe that Point Buy characters should be able to produce a characteristic score that random rolling can't.
I would have different point-buy levels. 100 for low, 125 medium, 150 for high. Minimum 2/5/10 points/stat.
Remember that on average you will score 99 pts with the dice. The free reroll of your lowest stat will increase this to about 100.
I gave my players 120pts, and now that they're all Rank 8 I regret doing it, as they're all overpowered munchkins. I would not do this again, and 150 pts is just waaaay over the top.

I disagree, if only because I've seen people who roll d10/d100 entirely too well, I myself roll an average of 130 on 18d10s. Which is why I tell my GMs, that if I roll like that, to feel free to make tougher enemies. I prefer point buy, because a lot of the other players don't roll like I do, now I still end up meaner than the rest of my party (49 on an astartes bolter, against a hive tyrant, the same round as a 37 point hit, this was a rank 1 tactical marine), but it isn't compounded by my worst stat being the equal of the next best stat in the party. What point buy does is keep the hot-rollers from dominating the game and making everyone else feel useless.
Which the only point of our assault marines in the aforementioned game, was to keep the monsters away from me, because I could only obliterate so many at a time.
