Maybe the next expansion will shore up problems with the game instead of taking it in a new direction.
What if the next expansion was a slightly revised main board? It's one of the oldest and clunkiest components in the game. I'd like to see a more tactical map, with less negative space on the board, and vortexes instead of monster/outskirt limits. And maybe try to breathe new life into lame locations like River Docks and Velma's Diner. And more mask monsters for poor Nyarlathotep.
Dead areas can be made more lively by requiring an encounter at the location before the special ability of that location can be used. Hence you must have a Church encounter before you can buy a Blessing....
This doesn't help Velma much, but if you add a house rule that Velma has extra text that reads: after you have an encounter at Velma's you could pay $1 to restore 1 Stam and 1 Sanity, she becomes a good place to stop for a pick-me-up - especially if you activate Velma's Grtaitude.
It's funny you say that, because I do almost the exact same thing. Almost exactly. The only difference with my house rules is that you can spend $2 at Velma's to restore 1 Stamina or 1 Sanity, and you can do it up to three times per turn. It's not as thematic as yours, but I didn't want Velma's to become too powerful. Still, your ability for Velma's is pretty nice. I might switch to that.
I also revised the River Docks to make it more practical. Instead of spending 5 toughness in trophies to get $5, you spend 3 toughness in trophies to get $4. It's a better value, and it's an option for people who don't have enough trophies to use the science building.
I also took missions out of the deck. They're available at the Library to anyone who passes a Lore check.
We remove Tasks and Missions when they come up. Any Investiagtro can take them up, but only one Investigator can complete them.

FAQsport Horror. Each location encounter is simply a FAQ question and its answer. If you have a rules question during the game, you have to send someone to FAQsport and hope he gets the encounter that answers your question.
Horror!
I think the long delay in the FAQ honestly shows just how well Fantasy Flight gets Lovecraftian horror...there are no true answers, and a search for them is an exercise in futility and reveals only madness.
As for what I think is coming next...uh...don't know.
As for what I kinda hope is coming next, but know probably isn't...um...computer version?
I've mentioned this before, but I think it'd be cool to have an official computer version of the game to play online with folks.
This is probably heresy, but there is a part of me that feels Arkham Horror is "done" and I would be grateful for no more expansions after MH. Fan expansions such as the Lovecraft Horror Expansion, Dark Corners of the Earth and 16 Custom Investigators (all freely available on www.boardgamegeek.com) can fill out the need for AH expansions, whereas individual components, such as new GOOs, Heralds and Scenarios can be freely found in the Fan Creation section of this forum.
If FFG do create a new expansion, it would probably be a small box-set based on the Mountains of Madness or Goatswood. The problem here is that neither location really fits in well with Arkham, which as we all know is in New England. This would either lead to extra boards - making table space and gate dilution even bigger issues - or could be formed of additional cards and some kind of mechanic that make reference to the MoM / Goatswood. The latter would not really capture the atmospehere associated with those stories. Furthermore, unless any new mechanics were cleverly designed to exploit the current mechanics (such as Kingsport Rifts being driven by monster movement or Innsmouth Insurrection being driven by null gate draws), would be diluted to the point of being a non-threat in an "all-in" game.
Incidentally, we do not know if / how MH proposes to deal with Gate Dilution. One simple solution would be to supply X Mythos cards with two Gates on them. Players with the relevant expansions treat these cards as double-gate cards (no doom tokens but two gates open), whereas players without the expansions open a gate in Arkham as per usual. Whilst this may not speed up the Doom Track in an expanded game, it will ensure that gates open in Dunwich / Innsmouth, pumping monsters out into the vicinity. These monsters then feed into the internal mechanics of those locations (The Dunwich Horror / Innsmouth Uprising) via vortex movement. This, plus the enhanced threat of a Gate Limit, provides players with plenty of incentive to keep these gates under control.
I wouldn't rule out anything as far as more expansions. AH is definitely one of FFG's biggest selling titles, and the interest in the game still seems to be pretty high. That could always mean more stuff is on the way. On the other hand, I might think with Mansions of Madness and Elder Sign that they're trying to develop other branches of the AH tree more than focusing on the trunk, so to speak. And MH and the revised CotDP could be an indication that they're trying to wrap things up, sort of. But maybe not. I'd still like more investigators, more GOOs, more heralds and guardians and such, and no doubt "AH add-on packs" including those kind of things could still come out (although as Jake says, there is plenty of great custom stuff available for that). I'd also like to see the same basic AH system used for a completely new setting, as in Mountains of Madness.
It also wouldn't surprise me at all if FFG is putting together some kind of AH Collector's Edition. But if that ever happens, then at that point I would hope the game is considered finished and complete, unless they leave room in the Collector's Edition box for more stuff.

More monsters! More more heralds! A Nyarlathotep boosting expansion, focusing on the AO and his masks, not locations (the same concept could be repeated for any AO really, additional customization of AOs and their powers. Cursed items in the item decks (it's buried away under the fan creation section, but I think it'd be a great idea). More detailed Epic Battle cards perhaps (we'll see how the new ones turned out). But for the "love" of the Elder Gods, please not another board ;'D
I hope AH is coming to an end, I love the game but I think we are running out of H.P.L. source material to base new expansions on.
Not everything in AH is based on the writings of H.P.L., some is from other writers who expanded upon the mythos he created. I can't help but thinking now that FFG are publishing their own novels that this lets them add whatever they want into the mythos, if a game designer comes up with a good idea for an expansion FFG can just write the ideas into a novel to make them official. For this reason I'd expect a dark waters expansion at some point in the future.
I'm more excited about the AH spinoff games, Mansions of Madness and Elder Sign, as this gives scope for more of H.P.L's stories to be made into games. The stories that aren't based around Arkham are difficult to fit into the base game but could be given their own games.
I hope that the plastic inlay in the miskatonic horror box is designed for holding lots of cards, not just the 2 sections for normal sized cards and one section for small cards found in the other big box expansions. It would make life a lot easier if the cards from all the expansions could be arranged in this new big box inbetween games.
I also think the new spinoff games could be a source of new AH material, E.G. new investigators could be added in a MoM expansion and also include the investigator cards for AH. Similar to how DungeonQuest contained the character cards for Descent and Runebound.
What I would most like to see for AH is a hardcover rule book containing the rules for all the expansions, including errata, with a bunch of variants, scenarios and optional rules to use.
For some reason this got me thinking of the Lord of the rings ... and so I whipped up the following:
Three boards with towns to hunt for clues,
Seven expansions (right now) to throw into the mix,
Nine heralds to select one (or two) to use,
All for one game with innumerable tricks
From the works of Lovecraft whose Elder Gods never die.
One town to link them all, one town where you'll find them,
One town named Arkham with Miskatonic to help find them,
From the works of Lovecraft whose Elder Gods never die.
'Nuff said. Time I should go to bed.

In my case it's more a case of withdrawal as I've not played in almost two months due to a move. My stuff will be coming out of storage the end of this month. I'm looking forward to resuming play with both the revised CotDP and Miskatonic.
I think POD (Print on Demand) Ancient Ones, heralds, investigators, and (maybe?) guardians would be a spectacular idea. I think it would be a feasible way to expand AH without choking it with more cards. So far FFG has only made POD for Death Angel but hopefully, Yog-Sothoth willing, this would extend to AH and other games as well.
I sort of dread ANOTHER board expansion, but if they do make one after MH, the call of the expansion will be too great regardless of how monstrous and bloated this game will become. I must has it!
