What's going to be new after Miskatonic Horror?

By MadRabbi666, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Just recently got into Arkham Horror, I'm curious to know what are going to be the upcoming products for Arkham Horror after Miskatonic Horror., It's an excellent game, unique and tons of replay value. Besides some of your games, I am also involved with Flying Frog Productions' board games, such as Last Night On Earth, A Touch Of Evil and Invasion From Outer Space for the same reason.

Though they are quite high in price, their uniqueness surpasses the cost of the product itself. Arkham Horror is my all time favorite because victory is almost impossible especially going after some of the Ancient Ones (except for Azathoth for he ends the game wining.)>

Tannhauser and City of Thieves are also excellent, but I can't wait to see what The Adventurers: The Pyramid of Horus. I'm hoping it's as good as its predecessor The Adventurers: The Temple of Tlaoc (which was from another company).

Keep up the excellent work, and hoping to see much more in the years to come.

Victory is always possible (even in final combat), except against Azathoth.

Chuck Norris defeated Azathoth in final combat. (Or was that Patrice, I forget?)

Chuck did beat Azathoth but then Patrice gave Mr. Norris a beat down.

I realize that I'm liable to end up being the latest participant in a long and storied tradition of mistakenly declaring that any given expansion will Probably Be the Last One, but I'm becoming increasingly of the opinion that they'll be ending the line with Miskatonic Horror (and the Dark Pharaoh revision).

I was a little bit concerned when they announced Mansions of Madness, but now with Elder Sign on top of that...it's hard to imagine why they would release two ambitious (yet perhaps vaguely redundant?) spinoffs in rapid succession unless they're planning to take the franchise in a different direction. But one can hope!

Like subochre, I'm not making any predictions just to be proven wrong again. But it can't be denied that the Arkham franchise has done a lot of stuff it hasn't before: novels, spinoffs, add-ons (dice and minis), and the first-ever expansion revision and expansion-expansion.

This could very well signal the end of Arkham expansions. But the good news is that FFG's print-and-play has the potential to see many small additions to the line. And, who knows? Maybe certain expansions will see some much-needed revisions (I'm thinking the Cult of the Thousand, Patrice Hathaway, Daisy Walker, Rhan-Tegoth, and maybe an updated "Kingsport rift explore" mechanic where the encounter you take determines how many, if any, rift progess tokens you can remove, that makes thematic sense to the encounter. Also, rifts opening only in Kingsport would be nice).

The "Rifts opening in Kingsport" is something I'll try for my next 16 games which will consist of AH + CotDP + DH + tKiY + KH + LatT, with the Lurker and The King in Yellow as Heralds and Hypnos as Guardian. The Rift opens on the location determined by the last placed Rift Token

It's simple and it makes sense. I've played that rule since I thought of it and I have no intention of stopping.

Why should Arkham have all of the fun ~ plus, it will give that person stuck in Kingsport something else to do . . .

Eh... There are lots of competitive games out there. Not so many cooperative games. And none like Arkham. I don't think this is the last we'll see of it :')

If FFG is like any other business out there then so long as we keep buying them they'll likely keep making them.

Maybe the next expansion will shore up problems with the game instead of taking it in a new direction.

What if the next expansion was a slightly revised main board? It's one of the oldest and clunkiest components in the game. I'd like to see a more tactical map, with less negative space on the board, and vortexes instead of monster/outskirt limits. And maybe try to breathe new life into lame locations like River Docks and Velma's Diner. And more mask monsters for poor Nyarlathotep.

Maybe, but I think the main question is one of opportunity costs, in particular, whether they think they can sell as many expansions for AH as for some new game. In many ways the current state of affairs is less like board game publishing than it is like RPG publishing, which nowadays (I'm looking at you, WotC) is all about using periodic reboots in order to bring in new customers while at the same time coming up with new variations on existing art and story content which can then be resold to existing customers.

Er, not to be horribly cynical or anything lengua.gif

Whenever you're feeling Cynical, just think WWLD (what would Lovecraft do) and make kissey faces at rainbows while hugging a bunny.

Dead areas can be made more lively by requiring an encounter at the location before the special ability of that location can be used. Hence you must have a Church encounter before you can buy a Blessing....

This doesn't help Velma much, but if you add a house rule that Velma has extra text that reads: after you have an encounter at Velma's you could pay $1 to restore 1 Stam and 1 Sanity, she becomes a good place to stop for a pick-me-up - especially if you activate Velma's Grtaitude.

I think it's going to be the FAQ. FAQ Horror. That's why it's taking a millenium: they're giving the FAQ its own board, cards, and monsters!

I can neither confirm nor deny this theory.

...

;'D

Just wait until the FAQ for the FAQ is released! That one will be over a thousand pages long (it will also contain an infinite non-euclidean self-reflecting mirror hall of FAQs, any who even glimpse at it will have their minds shattered).

FAQsport Horror. Each location encounter is simply a FAQ question and its answer. If you have a rules question during the game, you have to send someone to FAQsport and hope he gets the encounter that answers your question.

Horror!

Horror!

But if you're using the herald, you can gain Answer tokens by spending stamina if you have a Blood FAQ, or sanity if you have a Soul FAQ

I love how, while waiting for the currently-announced expansion to be released, Arkham fans will begin asking "so what's next?"

This trend has been going on since at least Black Goat's near-release.
