Hunt for Gollum Preview Event - Answering Questions

By FiendishDevil, in The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game

Hi there,

Today I am at my FLGS with two tables set up. We are demoing the new Adventure Pack's Scenario! At my table, I've created decks using all the new cards.

The breakdown of the Adventure Pack is as such.

1 Hero Card

1 Set of Neutral Cards

2 Sets of Tactics Cards

2 Sets of Leadership Cards

2 Sets of Lore Cards

2 Sets of Spirit Cards

The Hunt for Gollum Scenario and Encounter Cards

*Set is 3 copies

I'll be answering any questions here in this thread. I will not answer any questions about the Encounter Cards or Scenario, you'll need to wait or go to an event to see what it's all about!

Just to throw it out. The decks that I have constructed for my demo game are as follows:

  • Lore/Leadership - Healing/Support - Glorfindel, Beravor, Gloin - Elf/Dwarf Theme
  • Spirit/Tactics - Questing/Battle - Legolas, Eowyn, Dunhere - Rohan Themed
  • Tactics/Lore - Battle/Support - Bilbo, Thalin, Gimli - Eagles Theme
  • Leadership/Tactics - Questing/Support - Aragorn, Theodred, Eleanor - Gondor/Dunedain Theme

1 Hero Card - Bilbo [spoiled on FFG page]

1 Set of Neutral Cards - Song of Kings [spoiled on FFG page]

2 Sets of Tactics Cards - Some kind of Eagle card?, other?

2 Sets of Leadership Cards - Fireside Stories?, ?

2 Sets of Lore Cards - Rivendell Minstrel [spoiled on FFG page], other?

2 Sets of Spirit Cards - Summoning the Rohirrim?, ?

The only question I would have had was if it was necessary to get two sets if you are playing with 3 or 4 players. Seeing the make-up of the set it would appear so. There's no demos going on in my area so you guys have fun with out me.

Yes you need two cores to play 4 players. The two cores provide enough tokens and the threat dials for 4 players.

Tactics: Eagle Ally and Eagle Summoning Event

Leadership: Fireside Stories and Dunedain Attachment

Lore: Rivendell Minstrel and Location affecting Event

Spirit: Rohirrim Summoning Event and Rohan Trait Ally

Out of curiosity, does this eagle have some willpower? I believe Journey to Rhosgobel will also bring more eagles. Hopefully, this is the start of a string of tactics heroes/allies with decent willpower so that the most unbalanced sphere can start to get some footing.

Cost: 2

0WP/0STR/4DEF/1HP

Sentinel. Cannot have restricted attachments.

Forced: After an attack in which this ally defends resolves, pay 1 tactic resource or discard this ally from play.

1HP?so Radagast's ability can't heal this eagle ally...

Looks like no. But sure there will be a lot more of eagles. And probably Radagast will be the key card in the deck build up around different eagles.

Some kind of Eagles deck

Played 5 games today of the Hunt for Gollum. Used basic decks with the new cards added in.

First 4 playerer game. Could not handle threat level which got up to 30

Second 4 player game. Same thing. Threat level got too high. I was out by turn 3.

Third 3 player game. Threat level again too much.

Fourth 2 player game. Threat level again too much.

Fifth 4 player game. Seemed to have got the hang of it as we won without too much stress!

so the difficult level is?

Player Cards:

Leadership:

- Dunedain Mark, Attachment, plus 1 attack, may pay one to give attachment to another hero

- Fireside Story, all players draw 1 card

Lore:

-Rivendel Minstrel

-Strider's Path: When a location is revealed, immediately travel there without resolving it's travel effect. If there's another active location, return it to the staging area

Spirit:

-Calling the Riders (or something) Search top 10 cards for a Rohan ally

-Westfold Horse Tamer: 1/0/1 with 1 hit point I think, discard to ready a hero.

Tactics:

-The Eagles are Coming!: Search top 5 cards for an eagle ally

-Winged Support (or something) Ally, Eagle 2 cost 0/0/4 with 1 hit point. Sentinel, after you use him to defend, you must pay 1 or discard him

I really loved the expansion! All the player cards are great, I think the Eagle cards for Tactics were my favorite. Art is awesome as usual.

I also really liked the scenario (we played with 3 players), it was more generally, gradually difficult, unlike Passage down the Anduin which is really hard from the start but then can be really easy at the end. The scenario is set up so that you return to the second stage if you don't have a clue at any point during the third stage, so even though we had pleanty of allies and resources up our sleeve, it didn't guarantee a victory. It felt more like the scenario was increasing in difficulty to match our increasing power. It was awesome. We lost.

Question about Strider Path. What is than event i suppose??? And what happen with travel tokens if you have them on active location???

Stay on the card, i guess, unless SP specifically states otherwise?

I like the sound of that card alot, Eagles sound interesting but with currently on 3 Eagles available, I'm not sure the tactics event to search for 1 is good value at the moment is it? Seems a pretty pointless card untli we get more Eagles in the next expansions - have tactics been given short shrift again?

Are Bilbo's final stats the same as the early preview we got from FFG?

That I also wonder.

The stats of the eagle are : Cost 2 (Tactics) 0 Will, 0 ATK, 4 DEF, 1 HP. Every times it blocks, you must spend a red resource not to discard it.

Other interesting cards :

Lore : 1 Resource, Event, Response : When a Location is revealed, you can immediately travel to this location without resolving any "Travel" requirement. If another Location is active, put it in the staging area.

Leadership : 1 Resource, Event, Action : Every player draws one card.

Leadership : 1 Resource, Attachment : The character has +1 FOR (you can also change the character on which it's on, but I don't remember the cost).

Knowledge : 2 Resource, Ally, 1 Will, 0 ATK, 1 DEF, 1 HP. Action : You may discard this ally to untap any hero.

Others are more like tutor effects, but pretty useless right now though they will be pretty in the future I guess.

An yes, Bilbo stats are as previously revealed :(

Bilbo sounds bad.To weak, to expensive and mostly useless. But you never know in the end......Why they change the formula with him???? attack+will power +life point= treat cost he suppose to be treat cost 7.

Bilbo

TC 9

W1

A1

D2

HP2

is ridiculously overpriced, I say. It is one point less than Beravor. Who would want to swap? Only a 100% Bilbo oriented kind of player, eh?

Only perhaps that Hobbits will get some thrilling trait cards in the future. But Frodo does not seem to follow this +3 cost trend. He seems just ok.

6, actually.

Ahh, thank you. No willpower on this one, either. And no attack, inexplicable for a tactics ally. Looks like straight cannon fodder in order to soak up encounter attacks.

What about the Dunedain attachment? Can it be moved amongst your heroes or amongst your characters? Big difference there. Not that I think it would help the eagle much, with his defense, I think he would almost certainly be defending all the time and therefore not in need of it.

What are the other 2 eagles? I don't recall any bird cards or anything being labelled as "Eagle"
