Miskatonic U question

By Tyrant242, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

As I have just started enjoying the madness of AH, this isn't really on my radar for the time being. However I just wanted to see if my impression of it is correct. Instead of a whole new board and new significant play mechanics, this one is a huge enhancement pack for the already existing materials. At least that is what I seem to infer. So I would really want to wait until last on this one so I can enjoy the original expansions as planned and then spice them up later with this. Also now that I think about it, how do the majority of you arrange your decks? Do you leave the small boxes in all the time and then just add big board specifics per session? Or do you do a complete seperation and just add them as you please. I ask because I have KiY already and if you just add the normal stuff like items and spells and leave out the acts, blight, and herald it would seem not to dilute it too much. Just looking for some good advise. As I am playing through my first solo, I am already enjoying the heck out of this game. No regrets here at all for the purchase. Just trying to figure out how to use more than one board on my current playing space. the Ah set alone is a space hog.

All location cards mixed together. Same for all small cards. Mythos and Other worlds in according to the game I play, which means 2 big box expansions (one being always Kingsport) and 1 small box expansion at a time. All monsters in the cup, regardless of the expansions played. Sometimes, I use a random mix of Lurker & base game gates. According to the expansions combo, some investigators are restricted (i.e. you cannot play Innsmouth investigators in a game without Innsmouth)

I do similar to Julia. All Location and item/skill cards are always mixed. I always mix the gate cards of all the expansions except Dunwich and Kingsport (since they have unique locations on them on usually end up with a boring "Other" encounter). All monsters in the cup.

Expansion Mythos cards only get added to the base deck when I am playing that expansion. Non-theme related materials, like personal stories, relationship cards, Lurker Gates and the like can be used all the time.

As a side note, I never use more than one expansion at a time.

As for myself, I play with every card in every deck in every game. With the small expansions, it's never an issue. With the board expansions, though, I still play with every card even if I'm not using a particular board. The only issue I come across is having a gate open to an Other World location that is on a board I'm not playing with. To resolve this, I either simply remove that gate token from the board, replacing it with another, or redirect that gate to another similar Other World location that IS on the board. e.g. If I'm not playing with the Kingsport board and I draw a gate token to Unknown Kadath, I will say it's a gate to R'lyeh since they share the same color combo. I make the choice depending on how many people are playing. Technically, keeping those gate tokens in the game even though I'm not using the corresponding board is a bit of a cheat since it'll take longer to run out of gate tokens.

The other issue I come across which everybody deals with, is deck dilution. But I have yet to find a decent way to deal with this.

I've played every which way possible, but I don't like all-expansion games because of (A) the dilution factor, and (B) with 20 unstable locations, there's no time to actually enjoy the game (commonly known as "Speed Arkham"). That is, I prefer the theme to the win.

Therefore, I almost always play "1 big box expansion, 1 small box expansion" only. Nowadays, the small box is Lurker, currently the only small box that really got everything right. (Except the Herald...siddown, Avi. gui%C3%B1o.gif) So I cycle Lurker + one other town for Mythos, Encounter, and Gate decks, while my Investigator decks have all expansions mixed in. I also throw in a few miscellaneous bits from some other expansions for every game: Specific Ally Encounter cards and dual-color Gate cards from Dark Pharaoh, Sheldon Gang, Rail Pass, and Condition Encounters from Dunwich, the Intermission Mythos from King in Yellow, the Young Zoog Encounter from Kingsport. All Investigators, all Ancient Ones, all monsters, all Lurker Gates with half of the "normal" Gates mixed in.

So each game has a slightly different flavor from the last, without losing any of the difficulty from any used expansion. I really look forward to seeing how Miskatonic enhances my games, as well as those all-expansion ones.
