Playing my first game of MoM...

By Porpus Boy, in Mansions of Madness

Not sure if there is already a topic for this but here's my question:

Can anyone recommend a story to use for my first time playing MoM?

This will be my groups first time to play (all of us) and my first time to be keeper and my first time to play also.

Thanx in advance for your suggestions!

P.S. I have NOT seen the game demo-ed anywhere either.

I started with first than second and so on and it was fine with my group(learning curve was fine).dont forget FAQ

Story 1 is very good as an introduction to MoM.

  1. There MIGHT be combat, but depending on keeper and # of investigators, it ranges from "not a lot" to "all the time". You as the keeper can balance it by either focusing on the one type of monster you can spawn or using a lot of Mythos cards.
  2. The events try to balance the speed players progress with. They affect the group differently, depending on whether certain clues were found (= the investigators are fast) or not (= they are slow).
You should watch out to not get confused - the event cards state "If ... do ... else read below" at the top. You either deal some horror damage (which annoys but doesn't really stop them) or spawn monsters (which definitely hinder them).
  3. Depending on the keeper, first time investigators might quickly learn how to move inside the mansion. Stick together and all that ;)

However!
Beware that this story gets VERY boring if there aren't enough investigators. If your group consists of only 1 keeper + 1-2 players, you might want to allow multiple investigators per player.

I also found that Scenario One is the best to start with. On my first play through I used variant B for the overall story ending, dont remember the minor choices. This is an excellent story to teach players one of the first real rules of MoM, namely don't split up the party! After dropping several maniacs on lone wolves (is it possibles to have that word combo?), they figured it out. In a later game, this lesson paid off as their combined power helped beat Scenario 2, Ending B. They survived a hound of tindalos, a shoggoth AND the cthonian at the end. Each of the Stories gets progressively more complicated I feel, but they are all pretty fun in their own ways.

It is also funny that I have seen complaints from others online at different sites, of the super long setup time for this game or for AH. My gaming group can set up a scenario in less than 15 mins. All it takes is a little proper organization and some half size ziploc baggies. Also, going down to your local Office Depot or some like place and getting some cheap plastic desk trays to organize components is also a huge help. Anything that gives you more time playing and less setting up is a good thing!!
