Ditching the simple points system?

By Major Mishap, in Dust Tactics

It looks like the easy points system is being ditched then? sad.gif

The preview cards have all had double-digit points where we thought they were just place holders so not to give to much away, and you can now buy old cards with new points on, a big Booo-Hisss on this one.

yep , interesting that they site the new tourney points as such a big hit .......................... when so few people are playing in tourneys , and noone i have met uses them . infact , when i mention the tourny points system to new players (who play or used to play 40K or other minis games ) they seem to think the same thing , why both , the simple point system works just fine .

if they were so necessary , and so great , then i would think they would have been considered from the start , not as an after thought so many months in , but then again , when this game started , it was for more than JUST a 40K crowd .

though i guess it will help them justify pushing the tourney system ...................................... that noone plays in .

sounds more like "we want this to be 40K JR. , so screw you if you dont like 40K "

its kinda funny though in the sad wizkids sort of way . i remember a while back when we had several exchanges over the need to push for the table top minis game , and all the people who are in favor of it said that the game could be promoted to both table top minis gamers and non minis gamers alike , just as easily . i a argued that once a company starts trying to push the game in 2 directions , one falls by the way side while the other gets the support , and this is te beginning of that . this is the beginning of pushing away the nonminis gamers , infavor of ONLY the minis gamers .

its only a matter of time till they drop the grid , add in army books , and make every unit cheesable , just like in 40K

to bad , this game was so simple , and so appealing to so many people , to bad they had to decide to just cater to the minis gamers , and lose the non minis gamers that found this game so approachable .

the old points system was not broken , and infact was beloved by many of us ............................... that dont matter to FFG .

i will continue on for a while , but i will REVISE the points for new units BACK to the original system that made this game a hit , and got it out the door , NOT the 40K wannabe that this will become .

one of the biggest pros that there was to this game , is that its NOT like all the other minis games ................................. well till now , when we have reached that slippery slope , and FFG just took that first step down it .

i hope the contract that FFG has with DG is not eternal , and that at some point DG gets it back , and makes it the hit it was , not the travesty it will become .

@Grand. while i agree with you on so much of this. I want to point out that while they may have started down a slippery slope.. they have NOT fallen off yet!!

They are still releasing faster and more continualy then most any other game..which helps keep interest alive and the hunger just wet enough to want more..

like i have said else where..i agree with most points..i liked it simple, cus i could explain it fast and it didnt over whelm non-gamers that want to play too..and that it wasnt 40k, and i desprectly hope they NEVER go to "pay for power"system..then it will just be 40k.. and part of the best of this game is the learning to use what they have..not what you can give them.

either way..im STILL very happy to see stuff coming out.. and im looking forward to the new stuff.

I am debating about the point systems. The simple one is good for a small game. On the other hand, if you play a large game, then the new point system seems to be better in setting the balance. I feel that it is not necessary at this time but no on knows what is coming down the pipe at this time.

I don't think it's a big deal. The original system is simple enough that even if the new cards don't show it, anyone can figure it out and perpetuate it with the new units.

For me the bigger question is, "Who's running this game?" Is this FFG distancing itself from the original Dust Games and AEG points concept? Or is this FFG and Dust Games distancing themselves from an AEG driven points concept? Is Dust Games still involved or is this now an FFG project?

My whole group uses the tourney point system. none of us has yet to play in a DT tourny. It makes sense to us that Laser Grenadiers and Recon Grenadiers are not the same points, still love the grid though and hope they keep it. I would actually like to see 'army lists' something to bring a bit of structure to the models that will be released. Like airborn lists and super science/occult lists. FFG's moves are fine by me, anything i dont like i modify.

I do not understand the hubub about a change in the point system. Sure, now you may need a calculator to build a list, but other than that, I think the new list balances out the units. Maybe the simple points system can still be used to demo games since both factions in the starter set were balanced, but once you start adding on to that you have to think how balanced the system is and I do not think the simple point system is balanced beyond that.

IMO

My sons and i just agree on 2 class 4 walkers and 4 class 2 infantry as an example. When seelowe come out we will just use the walker and infantry class to determine the points cost of our armies anyway. I am looking forward to the new core set and all the future releases of dust tactics. I wish they had johnny one eye and the axis hero in the set also since there are no game stores where i live.
