A question concerning an unbalanced point cost in the Privateer career path

By Void_onion213, in Rogue Trader

I have a question of why the +10 to command and charm are 300:400 xp for a rank 2 career path. In the core book the skill appears at the same rank for 200 points each. I know that Calixian privateer is an alternate rank, but why the massive point hike for those skills. I have not noticed any similar occurrence in the other classes, also when is the erreta going to be updated again?

Probably because the Privateer as all alternative careers have skills and talents for 1 level and not 8 levels as the main careers are. You have noticed that there are fewer talents for the alternative careers in comparison of all the tallents for all the levels for the main careers.

The career path is a rank 2, the skill costs should still have some kind of realistic comparative value based on the values of the original point cost at the respective rank

As I understand after you take the Calix Privateer or any of the alternative careers you cannot switch back to your own career. As I understand the talents in the optional career table are the talents you could take for all the xp you will earn. So it is design to eat a lot of xp between (in your example level 2) and level 8 inclusive earn. As the obtional careers have no levels and the number of talents you could spend xp on is less than the number of talents from level 2 to level 8 inclusive for a normal career, the FFG team probably decided to increase the points of xp so will spend the same ammount of xp you spent for the normal career for the alternative career.

So the Calix Privateer talents are not increases for only a level but the rest of your levels, as are all the others careers.

really, that is all. Simply to eat xp. seems like a wast of a good alternate career. I see no reason for the xp hikes if the skills in question are in line with the career. Command +10 is an example, why make it cost twice as much when the base class gets it at the same rank for 200. If it was another class going into it a xp increase might be called for.

Basicly optional careers are a different class that are restricted by some conditions and that have fewer overall talents than the normal classes for the same amount of xp. Those talents for each optional career is a more specialized class . The characters of the main classes can trade their class for the optional career to become a more focus character in the field that each optional career specified.

It is likely designed for players who wish to play a more exotic character class ,and are not bothered by the mechanical handicap, and more likely roleplay their class and rarely use the dice.

Think about ,the optional careers are a mechanical filling and not the main course the main classes are.

just check the skill and talent selections for both, the Privateer has more options

So a Privateer more interested in filling their hold with booty and pleasing their patron while indulging in borderline illegal outlawesque activities has to go to more effort to inspire their crew than a Rogue Trader who feels entitled to his rights of command, guiding his loyal crew as if the hand of the Emperor himself were upon the rudder. Makes sense to me.

From Into the Storm page 71:

"To take an Alternate Career Rank, the player replaces the next rank they would have taken with the Alternate Career Rank. The new Advance Scheme is exchanged for the original Advance Scheme in that rank of the Career Path."

So it replaces only the single rank, not the whole advance scheme.

Also from page 71:

"While any new Alternate Rank will be filled with new opportunities, there are some drawbacks. This new focus may deny a character access to other Skills and Talents, or force the character to pay more experience for them."

So it clearly mentions that some items may cost more.

As you can see, the Privateer offers some skills that the RT can't get at Rank 2 (or some you can't get at all) such as Peer (Underworld), Forbidden Lore (Pirates, and +10), etc. Plus it makes sense that it would cost a bit more for Command as a pirate (which is what you are basically) would be trusted less, so thus has an increased resource cost for something like Command.

Probably to balance out the goodies you get from the alternate rank. For example you can get the talent Hard Bargain for the same amount of XP as in the original career path, but now you can take it at rank 2 rather then at rank 7.

Basically: you spend a bit more xp on command +10 (yes it makes no sense to me either why they bumped that one up), but you do get skills and talents that you can buy at a rank when you normally could only dream of the distant future when you might buy them if you surive that long (and honestly: hard bargain for example can make a world of difference to a party if you get it early).

your less of a 'i rule becaus i say so" person and more of a "lads there lotsa profit too be made so follow me" kind of person now

and yes the command +10 for 400 is a lot i do miss being abel too get forbidden lore xeno`s but then i can always beg plead and do an advanced skill for 200 too get it (a 100 more then "normal") but oh well being a know well conected rogue with alias and friends amon the pritats and other near well sound right up my xeno loving realy charming rogue traders ally
