Income "bonuses"

By Rydo72, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Quick question - does the -1 gold on Burned and Pillaged count as an "income bonus" for the purposes of say, for example, Rains of Autumn?

I would assume it counts as a negative bonus. So a player gets "a bonus of -1 gold a turn". So the effect would be cancelled.

Interesting question. KotHH is another, and maybe even more relevant, example. I don't know if there have been rulings by FFG in the past about this, so all I got is semantics. Now, English's not my first language, but AFAIK, "bonus" always refers to a positive modifier, never a negative one. Cf. the definition on wiktionary: 'bonus (plural bonuses): 1. Something extra that is good'. So, judging from that, I'd say the -1 gold on Burned and Pillaged is a negative income modifier, and not a bonus, which by definition is a positive modifier.

Extra question: Is the term "malus" commonly used in English as the antonym to "bonus"? It is in German.

I don't think Rains of Autumn would affect KOTHH since it's an agenda and not a character, location or attachment.

I agree with you on the meaning of the word bonus. The word itself implies a positive modifier. I'm just wondering if a game with complexities like GoT regards it as such.

Malus isn't really used in English, although as a Latin word, there's no doubt that it's probably used in some sort of legal/business/medical issue. I guess we would use "penalty" as the most common antonym. Surprising really, given the fact that much of the English language is derived from Latin and Dark Age/Medieval Germanic languages.

Argh, sorry. Just got what you meant about KOTHH and its not allowing other income bonuses ruling. Yes, that is a much more relevant example, since the GJ in which I'm using Burned and Pillaged runs KOTHH. And Rains of Autumn for that matter.

Ah, but it doesn't matter if you run KotHH. It matters if your opponent does. It's his location that's affected, no?

Again, good point - I really need to start thinking before I click the "Publish" button!

Ktom will likely be by soon to settle the matter, but I BELIEVE the official rule is that any effect which modifies gold income is a bonus, even if it is negative.

That's what I feared. Wow, that really reduces the effectiveness of Burned and Pillaged against KOTHH decks. I guess the initiative effect still works, but does little to offset the agenda's bonus.

Well, B&P is still awesome. It needs some drawbacks, right? It being a Condition is another important one.
