What Should I Buy to Get Started?

By colormage1, in Warhammer: Invasion The Card Game

Hello!

Amazon sent me an email a couple of weeks ago suggesting that I might be interested in buying this game. It seemed interesting, and the concept of a LCG was so new to me.

So I did some research on boardgamegeek.com and saw the "gameplay" videos FFG put up there. And somehow I kind of became hooked. The game just seems so absolutely amazing. I don't know why or what, but I just loved how it was explained and really can't wait to get my hands on it. (I'm an avid MTG player, if that explains anything.)

To get to the point, I've been doing research on what to buy and what not to buy and figured that it would probably just be best to ask you all what I should and should not buy.

OH! And I'd like to ideally be able to get (potentially) 3 copies of every card. There is something that happened (or a shift in design, if I researched correctly) about some of the battledecks where they used to not have 3 copies but now they do. Or something. I'm not sure.

If someone could explain that too, I'd really appreciate it.

And thanks!

Hello!

I will try to explain you few things :)

First of all few links:

war.dbler.com/ this site shows you many copies of a certain card is in battlepack (small number to the right of card), only cards from core set, assault on ulthuan and first cycle didnt have 3 copies of each card. The rest have, but this site isnt updated for some time and probably wont, so to see EVERY card, check others decks, create your own decks you should check another side:

deckbox.org/games/whi/cards

it's good to register there, so you will be able to see if there are any players near to your location. For more info search WH; Invasion forums in your country. If you're polish here is a best site:

whinvasion.pl/index.php

Just buy a single core set at first. It won't really give you many deckbuilding options, but it's enough to see if you'd enjoy playing the game mechanics-wise.

If you want the full package you have to buy everything 3 times until the second cycle (The Enemy Cycle) came out.

3x Core Set

3x Assault on Ulthuan (first expansion)

3x Skavenblight Threat

3x Path of the Zealot

3x Tooth and Claw

3x The Deathmasters Dance

3x Warpstone Chronicles

3x Arcane Fire

Everything else came with the 3x format where you only need to buy a single pack for the complete card pool but you should start with 1 core set first and find out if the playstyle suits you like Mallumo said.

I recently priced out everything on the above list (including all the expansions/packs you need to buy once only) at coolstuffinc.com and it came to about $370. That was before the release of Legends.

I think it's time for important question to FFG:

Will there be a reprint of Corruption cycle and Assault on Ulthuan with 3 copies of each card??

I've heard that Game of Thrones got something like that so why not to do it with Invasion

Hey colormage1. I'm also an MTG player and got into WHI a few months ago after keeping tabs on it since launch. It's a great game and the LCG model is awesome.

The best way to start is definitely the Core Set. Play around a bit with the pre-made decks to get a feel for how each faction plays. If you're curious about how the High Elves and Dark Elves play, get Assault on Ulthuan, too.

When you want to try some deckbuilding, sign up on deckbox.org and experiment with a few decks (you can set your decks as private if you don't want to share them). Your lists will show which Battle Packs and/or expansions you'll need to get to make a deck, and because you'll be buying complete packs and not just singles, you'll also get extra cards which could result in more deck ideas.

If you want to get 3 of every card in the game, it's entirely possible, but it'll cost almost $400 (as f7eleven pointed out). I don't think it's absolutely necessary to own every card, but I can see the appeal.

First, thank you all for the response!

It seemed when I initially posted in these forums, I posted the same topic all over the place and lost track of this one. Oops. (But seriously, these forums seem like they could just be a little better. That's for another topic!)

AHEM.

Thanks for the link to all the cards. I've been staring at them forever. I'm not even sure what everything does, but I love it.

So the "starter" decks don't have 3s of everything and the Corruption Cycle packs don't have 3s of everything? I know that they 'redid' their policy so that newer packs are all 3s, but that's from reading all this stuff and not really knowing what it is.

But with that said, and I posted this in my other topic, is there anywhere online where I can buy singles of these cards? I've been looking everywhere and can't find them. Mainly because I think I might, instead of play regularly, is create a draft format. Or something. I'm not sure. But I was just looking around for singles and couldn't find any. So if you know a place, I'd appreciate it!

Again, thanks! =)

It's unlikely that you would find any singles from a pure LCG like W:I. I just doubt that anyone would take the time and effort to purchase any of the packs and then sell them off individually.

TL

There's a guy selling singles on ebay.de. As you'd expect, the popular powerful cards like Verena got picked up fast, but the majority of cards didn't seem to sell. I guess he still turned a profit since he keeps at it, but by now, for a single Clan Moulder's Elite he asks half the price of the whole battlepack.

So, I just bought the Core Set and Legends. (Though in retrospect, I think I should have gotten the Assault Deluxe expansion instead because I would have like to have all the races available.)

I haven't added in Legends because my brother and I are still working with the base cards, and so far I'm really loving the game. I can't wait until we stop using the "base decks" and combine the factions!

I'm still slightly upset by how you can't use Dark Elf and Empire in the same deck. I understand the flavor reasons, but I feel like it's so much more fun that way; being able to combine everything! That being said, I'm allowing (when we build/draft) us to use whatever cards you want! Of course, neutral cards that say Destruction only must go with a corresponding Capital board.

But yea, I love this game so far!
