Talisman App for IPhone/IPad/Android

By burst2, in Talisman

Since I saw the footage of a digital Talisman version I was hoping that one day I can play with my friends over the internet.
This is because the people I play with live in different countries. I know that Talisman is great because of the interaction and fun playing with miniatures at a big table but I wish I could play it more often and at any location. I guess board players like you know the game carcassonne (2001). One or two years ago they made a successful Iphone/Ipad which started at 3,99€. Meanwhile it was awarded with "App of the month" (or was it year...?) and is sold for 9,99€.
The app is even better than the original board(pieces) game. Because you don't have trouble preparing the game and the software can tell you game informations which makes it even more strategic.

Just imagine a quick talisman game with your friends while waiting at the airport. If you are not finished with the game you can easily save and play it next time. Dice rolling - by shaking the ipad/iphone. Small animation when turned into a toad. You've got the game always in your pocket (It is already now a big deal transporting it when you go abroad (I don't want think about it when all expansions are released...). Save and load different multiplayer games: I remember playing with my cousin writing down all cards placed at the board and stats we ve earned playing last 3 hours but realising that we have to quit because one of us have to go sleep. Everyone in the forum could play against each other no matter where they live...

These are just some ideas and I would like to hear your pros and cons.

There are already a lot of other board game apps.

This would be my # 1 choice for sure. Those tablets are getting better too.

It would not have to be heavily animated either.

I bet it could be pretty fantastic.

of course there are more board game apps but most of them (like Monopoly, Risk etc.) have been digitised before. Carcassonne was always a pure board game before adapting it on the smart phones. The result is considered by many as a better version than the original one. The tablets industry is getting huge and in the future more and more important because it will sooner or later replace the paper.

If you know a video of carcassonne you might have seen the animations in it. This is how I imagine talisman app to be - very simple and clean.

You could buy the newest expansion through a in app purchase! babeo.gif

I would buy it. I don't think it would be too difficult to make a good AI for the game either since most of what it is doing is random. However, I would't want it ALWAYS attacking another player and if it did, it would need to be semi-smart if it went for Life, Loot, or Gold.

If FFG made an app for Talisman like the one they have available for Arkham Horror, I would go out an buy an iPhone today!

an app like the one for arkham horror would be nice too but what do you think about the whole game as an app. Playable through the internet with an additional wifi mode. For example you could place a ipad on the table (board game view) and connect it with 3 players sitting around it with their ipads/iphones (viewing their character sheets and items plus with a friend who lives in a different country. But everybody of them would also have the board game view on their devices...

I think that developing an app that supports the game would be cool; instead bringing the whole game on an app dont excite me too much, because i think that the beauty of Talisman is being played on board.

I was thinking about some nice features that can be built in an app: something cool will be a reproduction of the board that can be associated to dice-rolls and tell the player where his character can land, to speed up movements.

sounds good but than you would need to move on the iphone/ipad plus on the board.

I think an Talisman app which supports the board game would make sense if the whole card drawing + character sheet system would be happening on the device. So for example you move by shaking the ipod for a dice roll. Than the device shows you where you can move. The miniature is placed on the new space. You have to press on the new space where you want to go. The device knows the possibilities of this space - Either it asks you what to do or just draws an adventure card for you. For example: If it is a bag of gold it is automatically added to your stack. The other players device tells him that he is next... and so on... But with this system there would be no cards and almost nothing happening on the board.

The alternative is that you still draw the physical cards and for example when it is a bag of gold you scan it with the device-camera (augmented reality) and it is automatically added to your items list. I prefer this version of an app integration. This technology works already with every ipad/iphone. You would have to click on an icon which says 'get new item' and scan the card. This takes just a few seconds. This idea is of course copyright by me ;)

How is this Arkham horror app actually working?

I don't have an iPhone and likely never will, but I would buy/download a computer AI version of both Talisman and Arkham in a second. Same reasons given above by other people: I can't play as much of either as I would like, since it's so hard to get people together for the amount of time it takes to finish a game. I used to have a computer game version of Magic Cards, and it was a lot of fun...no animations at all, really, or hardly any. Just the game transferred from cards to the screen. The only real downside is that I would never stop playing them.

*cough* iPad *cough* seriously dude, you would want the bigger screen.

It has been a thought knocking around in my head for a while but have no time at all. If FFG want to employ me to work on it I might be tempted... ;-)

ObjectiveC however is not the easiest language in the world but once you can program in one, the rest is just semantics really. (At least once you get to the number of years that I have done...)

Ah, but I would only want it as a card deck and dice roller. Playing the game is a job for a board on a table, not a screen really.

Unless you wanted to have one phone for each card like this Game of Thrones player!

Broken image/link there.

I don't see how that would work. You would still need to place the cards on the board.

As with others who have posted. My potential players are hundreds of miles away so a live remote game would be the only way I could play so that would require a board as part of the app. The dynamic that makes things a bit tricky is the spells, everything else would be easy enough. Don't like sitting at a computer, do enough of that at work but a tablet would be great. Hey Ho. Maybe one day...

It would be great if one could play with an tablet or without - with an digital version of the board or with the printed one... I mean its just implementing an high resolution picture to the app ;)

Is there somebody who worked with augmented reality for smart phones? :)

It seems to be back working now as posted below by Nemo. If it still doesn't like being hot-linked then you can see the story here -

As to the idea. I think what I really mean is a play area tool which, as you say, would probably require being on a Tablet PC of some sort or other. They would be interconnected so that the deck is updated on all machines and you would use it to display your cards. It would even total up your strength and craft scores for you.

I personally don't have a wish for a board to be added, but it would only be another step to do that and make the game self-contained.

However, I think a card/play area tool is a more likely thing to happen (but still very very doubtful) as if Talisman was made available on tabs, given that software is easily copied/cracked/duplicated there would surely be a hefty impact on cardboard sales for FFG.

Although there is no app for Talisman for the iphone/ipad, there is decent clone of sorts called Dungeons and Dice. This is a borad game in the spirit of Talisman. It is only pass and play though, but well done none the less.

I think the main appeal for me for the game is as a board game and the social aspect of it. I've got concerns that a computerised version of the game could be rather dull and stale.

Saying that, I would love an app that would let me play the game in the conventional manner but allow other players to join in via an iphone/ipad.
This could work by the app managing drawing the adventure and spell deck. The players could keep their adventure decks in alphabetical order and place the relevant cards on the board when they are drawn. The app could also manage dice rolls etc. Whilst it needn't necessarily need to handle the mechanics of the game, it could keep a track of where players and cards are on the board. It could even allow for home made cards if it wasn’t handling any of the actual mechanics.

Using the video calling aspects of the ipad2/iphone 4 you could let the players see and shout at each other if needed.

FFG please do this now...Dungeonquest too...and maybe Game of Thrones. but mostly Talisman!

Touchscreen opens a world of possibilities, and Talisman will be perfect for it. The D&D crowd will have to buy it too as there is nothing good enough for them to spend their dollars on...

oh, and Deadwood...
