Timing of I'm You Writ Small and Jhalabar Xho

By bbleers, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

A few questions.

When the event card "I'm You Writ Small" (Core L 165) is played the text reads "Challenges: Choose a character. Until the end of that phase, that character gains deadly. Then, attach... to a Lannister character (as a Boon attachment) attached character gets +2 strength."

1.Can this card be played in the middle of a challenge or must it be played at the beginning of the challenge phase?

2. If it may be played in the middle of a challenge do the deadly AND +2 take place simultaneously? My understanding was that the character gained deadly only and the +2 str would take effect after all challenges are finished and the phase ends. The +2 would then be in effect as a lasting effect until it is removed or cancelled. The word Then to me clearly implies that all of the previous conditions must be satisfied but my friend argues that the +2 takes place immediately after deadly and attempted to use the card mid challenge in addition to his declared strength to win the challenge.

With the Jhalabar Xho card (F 2) The text reads "Opponents characters cannot claim power for renown".

Is this a passive effect that prohibits all opposing characters from claiming power from renown or must Xho participate in a challenge in order to keep participating characters from claiming power?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

  1. Before a challenge is initiated.
  2. After attackers are declared, but before Stealth is assigned/defenders are declared.
  3. After Stealth is assigned/defenders are declared, but before the challenge resolves.
  4. After a challenge resolves.

So if you play it in either #2 or (usually better) #3, you can indeed play the event "in the middle" of a challenge.

When this event card is triggered, it's effect does 2 things in order to resolve:

  1. Gives a target character "Deadly"
  2. Attaches the event card to a Lannister character - transforming the event card into an attachment that says "attached character gets +2 STR."

You are correct that, based on the word "then," everything in #1 must happen successfully before #2 can be successful, but "give a target character Deadly until the end of the phase" is going to be successful unless the event itself is canceled. You don't "wait" to see if the duration is successful because the success of the event's effect (giving Deadly) doesn't depend on duration of the grant. If the character dies in the very next action, giving it Deadly was still successful. So attaching the event happens as part of resolving the event. And as soon as the attachment is on a character, the +2 STR applies.

Look at it another way: if you did wait through the entire duration of the Deadly grant before doing the "attach this card" effect, what would you do with the event card until then? It can't hang around in play, and once it is put in the discard pile, it does not interact with the game unless something specifically says the card in the discard pile interacts with the game. So if you had to wait to see if the character you gave Deadly to lasted through the entire phase without losing the Deadly, there would never be a way to attach the event to something without breaking a bunch of rules.

This is a constant effect that stops all opponent's characters from claiming power for Renown while he is in play, participating in a challenge or not. If the card doesn't say anything about participation, don't add it in.

Thanks for clarrifying that for me. Appreciate the input
