Homebrew Sectors

By vastrix, in Rogue Trader House Rules

Has anyone done up any whole home brew sectors? I was wondering how many systems would be good to mark out, how many stellar phenomona to have, and so forth. I'm thinking near Propspero for the one I am working on. The Drakis Sector (formerly known as the Anubis Sector until after the Horus Heresy).

We play in a homebrew sector which my crazy friend invented whole cloth. He's got about 2 dozen sectors in there, a few not really explored. I think part of it boils down to how big you want the sectors to be, how densely populated, how much time you want to spend in the warp and just what types of Endeavours you feel like throwing at the PCs.

Exploration endeavours would be rewarded by larger sectors, I would imagine.

Well this is a small sector near Prospero where it was discovered by the Thousand Sons during the Great Crusade. A unique Warp energy permeates the entire sector thanks to a dead world covered in devices that channel Warp energy into powerful ley lines. A lot of different worlds in the sector have had people evolve into specialized mutants with different psychic powers that they used to fight a powerful Chaos sorcerer called Skalar the Chaos Mage.

Several Legions were involved in the battles to defeat Skalar and his servants, but it was Magnus who finished Skalar off. A prophesy is in play to bring Skalar back to power and a few of the native organizations do know about this. The entire sector was named Anubis in honor of the Thousand Sons, but was changed to Drakis after the Horus Heresy. Those who were native to this sector before the coming of the Imperium still believe the Thousand Sons to be heroes and shelter a few from sight as they were left behind to learn of the unique powers to be found here. They have renamed the traitor Thousand Sons as the Sons of the Daemon and call the sector Anubis behind the Imperium's back. I have a dozen or so unique worlds and may throw in a few commonplace worlds. I downloaded some pngs to represent worlds and can probably edit up a map.

Most of my info is on my Blackberry and some rules have proven interesting to work up to say the least. Leave it to say when my players first fought Skalar years ago in a different system, I stole liberally from other sources such as Magic: the Gathering for different power sets and magical peoples. I now convert many of these old warriors into Warhammer 40k.

For an unexplored sector have about 5-6 subsectors the plot out a few major worlds or celestial phenomena. The rest can be added as the campaign progresses.

Only thing I found about the Prospero sector is that its in the Ultima Segmentum. A lot of powerful Xenos in this sector - Tyanids, Eldar, Orks, Tau and allied races. Also I think the Alpha Legiona and a large number of chaos warbands operate in this area. DW rules would be useful for its critters section and vehicles.

When I last looked at a map of the galaxy, Prospero was relatively close to Terra going coreward. I was just thinking somewhere from Prospero where Magnus would lead his Legion once they were rebuilt to fighting strength after the ravages of the Flesh Change.

Not sure where the Prospero Sector is in Ultima Segmentum - thats the largest segmentum I believe. Tau is on the Eastern Fringe tho, Tyranids sometimes bypass the galactic plane so they are still viable. Magnus teleported the City of Light to the Planet of Sorcerers in the eye of Terror after the Destruction of Prospero.

Furthermore after the invasion of Battle of the Fang, the Thousand Sons are pretty much decimated of military forces. I don't have the exact numbers but there are less than 1000 Thousand Sons now excluding Rubics of course.

Of course, you can have Magnus have forces hidden away or something. Your PCs will hate you tho if you can roleplay the mechanations of a Tzeentch demon lord properly. If done well, there is nothing more frustrating force to fight. Pyrrhic and empty victories are annoying as hell and typical when fighting the Thousand Sons. Take the Battle of the Fang, even though the Space Wolves won - Magnus succeeded in his objective for the war.

It's not truly homebrew, but I've set my campaign in the Cyclops Cluster sub-sector in the Gothic Sector. I didn't realise until about the second session that one of the major planets in the Cluster is the Forge World Mezoa, home of every second weapon out of the Trader book. Quite neat, really. I'll upload the handout I drew up and post it once I'm not at work.

The star map I have from this website shows Prospero in the Solar Segmentum, but it is fairly close to Segmentum Ultima so I may go in that direction.
