Request for Input: How to royally screw over a Psyker

By Darth Smeg, in Dark Heresy Gamemasters

Allright. We all hate Psykers. Everyone does, it's only natural. Now, how to really ruin their day? When they reach Rank 8, Psy Rating 6, and just Seal Wound/Regenerate everything you do to mess them up. When the Psycik Blade their way out of all the lovely traps you put them in. When they Shape Flesh and fly away from all the other trouble you drop them in.

Let's have it! Torpor in their drink, Weakened Veils, I'm all ears :)

Corruption (ooooh yeah on that one!) and Insanity :]

Other Psykers doing the same horrible damage on their arses. Booby traps everywhere. Tyranids! Necrons. Tau (give them at least Resistance (Psychic Powers), or even an immunity, a bit like the Untouchable package: they have no frikkin presence in the Warp, goddammit!). Eldar psykers come to screw some petty Mon-Keigh psykers wannabe.

Psychic blanks are always a great choice. Anti-psychic drugs and technology, such as null rods, are also good options.

Plus, there's always fighting fire with fire as Stormast mentioned. Remember that in different situations your NPC psyker can use Psynscience and Invocation to protect himself from incoming psychic attacks as well. There are some handy rules on that in the back of the Inquisitor's Handbook.

The Tau do have a presence in the warp, it is just not anywhere near as much as all the other races in the galaxy and they are just as vunerable to psychic attacks as pretty much everybody else in the galaxy.

First of all: I do not hate Psykers

Okay, you need to get a psyker into trouble. REAL trouble. Unfortunately, you are a bit …generic…about the situation. So, it is a blank canvas and you need a Biomant-Telekine-to be put down. Generally, a Rank 8 character of this class is a little trouble..

Corruption was already mentioned. Your Psyker might already have some of it. Remember, any roll on the PERILS OF THE WARP although causes a CP as well…. How much are already their? Could a holy zealot become an enemy of him?

Human Gear:
Your pc are high class, so will be some their enemies. Giving the “bosses” Psy-Jammer-Amulets (IH; p. 191) will at least help against indirect damages. Torpor (IH p.194) is a nice idea as well. Toxic Syphon cannot be used on oneself BEFORE the poison starts working. It is NOT a reaction. But I think it will not be deliverable by food or drink. Is said Psyker able to catch projectiles? Needle Weapons could deliver the poison…if there would not be all of this armour… but a sniper could deal with this.

Besides high-Quality stuff, mundane means are useable as well. Some people will not face a psyker to fight fair. They might rather sneak around to know where their enemies are living and where they regularly go and will plant a bomb . Of course, this will only work if you start your adventure with an attack on the Acolthey (or some roles to make them notice that somebody sneaks around) or if you have an adventure where they need stay in one place for quiet some time. Other option for a bombing run is to lure them into a trap. An anonymous call telling them “I have got information for you, meet in the Jollester Hostel, Room 45, in 2 hours”. There is a small pict capturing device, signalling to Room 27. Where three guys sit and watch a pict device…in their hand the initiator for the bomb under the bed. Place a puppet on the bed, face down. Blow up the whole room with 2kg of Fyceline (2d10+10 Explosive Damage; 10m Blast; see IH p. 178). Allow for a difficult Awareness test to notice camera. If this will keep them from entering…fine…otherwise… KA-BOOM. But keep in mind that this is heartless and not very sportsman like

How about a fanatic Witchhunter who is sure that the Psyker has gone to far? Best used if he has lot´s of corruption

Having somebody with the Pure Faith &Faith Talents working the psyker will give him a pause. Of course, it would need to be a major npc with "Touched by Fate". Such Talents need FP. This is a one-time-trick, so. Based on Blood of Matyrs, a madden Confessor could do the trick. A Redemptionist as well, so they will only have one Fait Talent. And those Fanatics are easy to abuse for people with the right hand for such things. Hand of the Emporer (BoM; p.109) will not harm the Psyker directily, but will help to boost other Fanatics.

Sanctified Carapace (BoM; p.117) helps against damage. Blessed Range Weapons (p.126) are a minor bonus.

Fanatics of this type might be Fearless or could turn into a Frenzy against a Witch/Psyker . For sure, they will have a Hatred against Psykers and will be Insanely Faithful . Paranoia could be a common trait amongst such individuals. As well as Resistance against Psychic Powers. An attempt at a Takedown with Shock Weapons would be my favourite tactic. After all, Psykers with a ringing had cannot cast powers.

(To be continued)

Last but least Heretical Powers & Radicals could turn on your Psyker.

Having a o nce-bound daemon host at him might be a match. Or somebody wielding an Empyric Conduit-Blade (RH; p.191) while armoured with I nmateria Wards (RH p.192).
Those ready to handle Xenos weapons might attack with a Xenarch Death-Arc or an Aether Lance (RH. p.200).

Of course, you might otherwise need to get a mighty psyker on your own. I will try to describe/stat up some idead for situations/opponents that could at least mean a little challenge to your Psyker. What else is in your group…besides a Tech-Priest, I suppose?

I have been using bomb-traps to great effect, lately, and it sure is a lot of fun! Now my players are turning into a paranoid bunch, which is just fine :)

The Acolytes are currently on Sinophia, and have just survived (barely) the attack on the Clockwork Court. Having them all drop their armour and heavy weapons and be surprised by Risen only wearing their sunday-best and pistol weapons was a lot of fun, too :) In the end our trigger happy assassin put a dual shot with bolt-pistols into the back of our arbitrator after a botched "I shoot into the melee" roll. Fate Pont burned, fun fun :)

Course, the Psyker is now the most wanted man on the planet after his little Dominate thing with Tiber the Rag-King. I'm just trying to get creative as in how he might go about getting his vengeance. I have a few ideas, but suspect spies on the forum, thus the ... generic... approach :)

Dammit, I've completely missed this. Not only that, but intil yesterday I thought Favoured by the Warp let you roll twice on the Perils list too.... My Psyker should have had at least another 5-10 CPs and a demonic posession too...

Dammit dammit dammit!!!

Even so, he has some 40+ CPs and could easily be targeted for purification by a sufficiently puritan person. Come to think of it, our Assassin is such a person. Hmmmmmmm.

Check out the stats for a Null Rod from the Rogue Trader supplement Into The Storm . Good times...

Dirty dirty dirty psykers. MakeS me feel unclean even talking about it but here we go:

Just put them in a party of player characters and wait until they roll a nine. Mwah ha ha...... ZAP ZAP ZAP!

Forty corruption?! I'm surprised you haven't sent people after him already. Given how the faith rules work in Blood of Martyrs work, I consider 30 CP the "damnation threshold" in the eyes of the Ecclesiarchy. Witchhunters, angry mobs, and perhaps even Arbites that are unaware of this character's affiliations are all options to use against this fellow.

But how would they know? I am not too familiar with the rules in BoM, and have yet to see a "Gauge Corruption" talent or similar gizmogadget..

Imperial Diviners, they're the one of the most common types of psykers, and Aura Reading will quickly tell how much corruption he has.

Indeed. Also, IIRC I think there's also a faith power that can determine Corruption levels. There are certainly some that are more effective against those who are corrupt. The Ecclesiarchy has a wide network as well, so if a Sister or another figure discovered his taint then his name would probably be disseminated quite quickly.

But would the Ecclessiarchy work with Diviners? Aren't they nasty witches only suitable for a bonfire?

I clearly vote against any "we will automatically sense corruption"-thingy.

Think about it. If this would be reasonably possible in the Imperium, their would be no hidden major chaos cults about. And no hidden Radical Factions. No corrupted psyker going about unseen.

...naaaah

My thoughts as well.

However, the following Faith Power might be useful:

The Unforgiving Blade
Blessed are the blades that smite the daemon, the witch, and the
psyker. With divine steel the children of the warp are cut deep,
and their blood spilled as a sign of their betrayal of the purity of
humanity. This ability allows the faithful to bless a blade to deal
horrific damage to those who are either touched by the warp or
call upon its powers as part of their cursed existence.
Prerequisites : Pure Faith, Wrath of the Righteous
Effect : With this Talent the faithful can place a potent
blessing on a single melee weapon that already inflicts
Rending Damage. The blessed weapon inflicts an extra 1d10
damage and gains 2 more points of penetration when used
against daemons, psykers and creatures with 20 or more
corruption points. In addition, blows from this weapon count
as holy attacks when used against daemons. Such a weapon
is difficult for the unclean to wield, and when grasped by a
psyker or character with 20 or more corruption points it will
burn, inflicting 1d5 Energy Damage each round he holds it
which cannot be reduced by armour or Toughness.

Burn : The faithful can bless a number of weapons equal
to twice his Fellowship Bonus provided he can lay hands on
each one (a Half Action per weapon).

Let's say the courruption-hunter decide to bless a beautiful knife, a most holy thing with lovely symbols of the Creed and other righteous images. Now let him challenge any suspect to prove his purity and faith by holding the knife. It may sting the sinner, and burn the unbeliever, but the righteous and strong of faith will go unhurt. As proof, he holds it himself. Then hands it to the Psyker while all around watch ...

If the psyker is known, there are probably no few ways to mess with him. There are bound to be some psychic-resistant xenoforms, ones that sufficiently radical and ruthless foes can use for assassination. Speaking of which, does the player have any way to sense an ambush of snipers from 200 meters away?

There was a beautiful line in the Cyberpunk 2020 GM guide (i.e Listen Up, You Primitive Screwheads!) that went something along the lines of "bombs and snipers and gas and crossfire will eventually get EVERYONE". If one lethal force isn't enough to take on uber-pysker, then use multiple ones. The psyker has nasal plugs or sealed armour? Try acid rounds from Rogue Trader. The snipers can be spotted? Then use longer ranged weapons, camo-cloaks or psyker-hidden snipers.

If you really want to mess up a psyker, Slaught are wonderful. Tough enough to challenge a space marine in combat and utterly immune to witchery, never mind being intelligent enough to come up with vicious plans. Maybe one has infilitrated Sinophia? Probably not, but one for later on perhaps.

Here's a link to an older thread that may be of some help.

Create a critter where not only will psyker powers not work on it, the critter will take all that energy that was put into the effect, put it into a psychic power of its own, and send it all right back at you. Example:

An over-confident moron of a psyker is facing down some strange greater daemon of Tzeentch . The psyker decides to use Force Barrage, thinking that as it worked so well on that Khorne berserker earlier, it'd work here, too. The psyker's player rolls 6d10 to account for the psyker's Psy Rating of 6 for the Focus Power Action and, adding his Willpower bonus of 8, gets a total of 57. Normally, this would result in 15 bolts doing 1d10+8 impact damage each. However . . .

. . . the daemon's master, Tzeentch, granted him the ability to absorb warp power. Remember that 57 that the psyker got for the Focus Power action? Well, the daemon absorbs all that energy, and then adds it to his own Focus Power action. The GM rolls 6d10 for the daemon's Psy Rating of 6 and adds its Willpower bonus of of 16 (it's got Unnatural Willpower), getting a total of 52. Adding the 57 absorbed from the Psyker, the final Focus Power action total comes to 109, resulting in 33 Force Barrage bolts (why Force Barrage? Just for that extra bit of irony) doing 1d10+16 impact damage each . Needless to say, the Psyker was not pleased as he was reduced to a greasy smear.

As a last resort, I suppose you could always send a Culexus Temple Assassin after the poor fool . . .

Hmmmmm..... Perhaps an Untouchable or two? Weirdboyz? Wait! I have the answer: Enslavers! gran_risa.gif

Please enlighten me as to what these Enslavers might be :)

Enslavers. One of the xenos species published with stats in Creatures Anathema. The form Psykers into warp portals to bring in more of their own kind...and then mentally dominate every sentiend life for around then...if they can.

@What to do against a Psyker:

DarthSmeg & me have been exchanging some eMails during the last couple of days. And here is what transpired so far

It will be fun to introduce my players to Riccard & Company.

Whenever U-thak beats someone to the ground, he will of course do a litle sandpeople routine from the first Star Wars movie, shaking his weapon in the air and shouting "Uuu Uuuu Uuuu UUU-THAAAK!!!" lengua.gif
