Using the new Illyrio's ability

By player1181705, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

When using Magister Illyrio's passive ability, "You may play attachments from opponents' discard piles as if they were in your hand." may I play a shadows card into my shadows area? Or would it be marshalled into my opponents shadow area?

Example of how I think it works:

In my opponent's discard pile is a VB. I use Illyrio's ability to play it as if it was in my hand into my shadows area. I may bring that out of shadows at the appropriate time BUT if I use its response once it is in play then it would go back into my opponents shadow since FAQ 3.29 states that "When a card leaves play for any reason, it always returns to its owner's discard pile, dead pile, hand, deck, or shadows area (depending on the specific circumstances).

So does that mean Crown of Meereen would have the same effect? If I can take control of an in-play Venomous Blade (only possible in melee really), it would return to my shadows area when I lose a challenge?

It would return to your opponent's shadows area since it is leaving play but since it is a response on a card you control you can decide not to use VB's response.

My question now is do OOH shadow cards have a gold penalty for putting them into play?

My inital guess is no based on City of Shadows say that you pay 1 ADDITIONAL gold if the card is OOH.

played from your hand during Marshaling. Bringing cards out of Shadows is a "put into play" mechanic, so the OOH gold penalty never applies.

The better clue that there is no OOH gold penalty imposed on bringing cards out of Shadows is the fact that all the non-neutral ones are all "House X only," limiting them to a particular House by rule rather than by the usual cost-benefit analysis.

About Illirio. If the attachment is an out of house attachment(and not a shadow attachment as you are answering in this thread), you have to pay the penalty in gold for the OOH card, haven't you?

I would guess yes you can. Remember to apply OOH if any applies.

Nope, cause Ambush is a put into play effect.

Hmmm... It looks as if me being up at 1:30am is affecting my reading and missing the words "put" and "into" on ambush. Good catch Skowza.

But you could pay the gold to actually play it, rather than using influence and the Ambush keyword.
