Annual GenCon roll call thread (2011 edition)

By finitesquarewell, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Many of us miss the "Former Champion".

I'm Ulrich from Germany. I will participate in the Thrones Warm Up Tournament on Thursday, the Call of Cthulhu Championship on Friday (therefore miss the Melee sad.gif ) and finally on Saturday I will be a part of the Thrones Joust Championship.

I expect to see Gualdo and some of his friends at Gen Con and I am interested if other players from Europe will be at Gen Con as well. Sadly enough it is not sure if I can make it to Stahleck this year.

Once Jay realizes that my the extra bye that I would have received for the NYC regional passes down to him because I already had one from DC, I think he'll be inclined to make another GenCon appearance this year. happy.gif

Can someone explain the advantage of a bye to me. I would think it weakens your opponent score/strength of schedule and therefore makes it more likely for you to miss the cut. Or do I miss something important here?

a "prize" bye has a strength of schedule of (n-1) wins and 1 loss, where n is the number of rounds of swiss played -- so it has the best possible strength of schedule assuming the "bye opponent" had only one loss in the first round

The "prize" bye is sort of like beating Eric|Mathlete|Rings in the first round, and then they go and steamroll everyone else.

Crud-muffins! Turns out I won't be able to make it this year after all. I was just about to hit "Go" on the flights and hotel, but I found out it's a no-can-do. My apologies all who looked forward to beating me senseless (Dobbler, Finite, Maester LUke, etc).

Barring any kind of unforseen emergencies I plan to attend GenCon this year and play in the Joust portion. I've never actually played Melee and have no idea how to approach it or build a deck for it.

I'm coming to my first Gencon, and my first AGoT national tourney!

Wow, sounds like we'll have a great turnout from Europe... I don't think there's been a European in CoC or GoT since 2006 when a quarter of the field for Cthulhu (3 of 12) were from the Old World.

You are gone have a lot of canadians too. I have three coming for sure and two are now on the fence.

You all have to be nice to us too since we are only ordering the cards now and have been playing with only the main box decks till now. lol

I will be there and am hoping several other Iowa guys are going too. In the meantime I need to play some octgn

You on the FB group? I'll be on for some of today and hopefully a bunch tomorrow wanting to play.

you should all join the irc chat!

I am on the facebook group under Jeremiah Duggan. You chat with me pretty regularly ;)

There was an English guy who came and played aGoT at least the first 4-5 years (unluckily, NOT Sir Poop-a-lot who was a great board contributor). Unluckily as well, he really didn't smell good and had a horrible attitude!

And didn't we have one more the year either Tzu or Luke won...seems like we had one person from very far away.

Looking forward to some long-distance travelers!

I remember a Scot, I believe it was, the year VED was released... he played in both the drafts. Boy those were sick when Davos & the Dragons could all be claim-soak.

Gosh that was silly.

Attention game companies, after playtesting is done please do not put in the biggest rule the game has ever seen last minute w/o informing said playtesters! lengua.gif

Unluckily Davos stayed that way for quite some time.

I am about 50/50 on GenCon right now. Tickets from CA are about 450 right now, plus I am going to have to take a couple days off work, so I am going to have to play it by ear.

A friend and I have a room from Wednesday until Sunday at a hotel right by Lucas Oil Stadium. I think it's about 5 miles from GenCon. It's $516 for all 4 nights and we're looking for one or two people who are interested in splitting the costs. The room has 2 beds but I'm fine sleeping on the floor, doubt my friend is though so that means we have one bed open and any spots on the floor open.

Feel free to contact me at robbiekelley(at)gmail(dot)com.

I'm just curious, who is typically the TO for GenCon? Is it a community player or someone from the company? (I'm hoping to coordinate gathering deck stats and some other info about the participants, when the time comes.)

Sorry, it's not right by Lucas Oil, it's about 5 miles away like I said. My friend was telling me the convention was by Lucas Oil and I thought he meant the hotel was. He is the one who registered the room.

Here's the exact details:

Fairfield Inn & Suites Indianapolis Airport
5220 W Southern Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46241

It's historical been an employee, or a designated volunteer. The balance between organization/recordkeeping and rules adjudicating has varied with the presence of Nate and ktom. TtBoMK, last year Jerusalem Jones was the "organizer" with Nate making the rulings... two years ago, Jaffer(?) did registration and ktom & Nate took care of refereeing.* In 2008 Morgan & Nate divided duties and the year before that ktom assisted Nate & I. Depending on how much of the FFG event center staff is at GenCon, they may have an assigned organizer to assist Nate, freeing him to adjudicating and watch. With the division of duties amongst several LCG Developers, there may be more personal in general, depending on how overlapping the various events are.

*Remember, if you have a favorable interpretation from judge, don't let an opponent consult the other one in a later game. You might find yourself playing by different rules. Woe to the usurp.

as it stands, it looks like i will not be making it. best of luck to all who attend.

<Daffy>You do realize, this means war.</>

Spears shall be shaken, shields shall be splintered! A sword day... a red day... ere the sun rises!

... Now I just have to figure out how to back that up.
