The First Deck I've Built-Greyjoy-Up For Critique

By TakeshiKovacs, in 4. AGoT Deck Construction

I've played a few games using the decks from QoD and LoW. This is my first attempt at deck construction. I don't think this deck can do a whole lot besides field some stealth and get adds from winter and warships. I didn't go heavy into forcing opponents to discard becuase I'm still not sure how to do that.

By going for Stealth and getting what I can from Winter and Warships how does this deck look? Suggestions?

Just a few comments because I don't have much time....

Add another copy of Wex Pyke - he's extremely useful when your opponent has no crests out.

Lose Shadowcats and add Syrio Forel if you own him - he's the same cost but far better and fits well into almost any deck.

Lose Ten Towers - it's extremely expensive for a location and it's not even that amazing to boot. Replace it with Iron Mines (fantastic cheap character save) and/or another copy of Longship Iron Victory (one of the only reliable means of draw in GJ)

I personally never play Sea Raiders - given the expense of GJ chars I would normally prefer to play another gold producing location/reducer as my limited card.

Given the Winter aspect you're going to be very resource choked - add in a couple more gold producers, (maybe Roseroads/Searoads if you're lacking a third Gatehouse?)

As for plots -you have a fair few Army crest characters, which is normal for most GJ decks that aren't holy based, so I'm sure The Power of Arms wouldn't go amiss.

I'll add a few more thoughts.

First, have you considered Distinguished Boatswain and Fishwhiskers? They have great stats/cost ratio and the penalties aren't as bad as they seem (you have warships so Fishwhiskers should be ok, and most people don't tend to keep a lot of cards in shadows for a long time, and even if they do, the Boatswains can be used for claim soak). In a winter deck, they are really helpful.

If you lose Ten Towers, then I'd add 2 more carrion birds and Samwell Tarly to help you with draw. Also, I'd add in street of sisters, street of steel and river row since they'll all speed up your deck and improve your resource curve.

It's a taste thing, but I prefer Sunset Sea to Bloody Keep. Even though it's only good once, it speeds up setup, I find.

Alannys Greyjoy is usually worth a slot in any GJ deck for the ability to either kneel an opponent's 3+ strength character or discard a card from an opponent's hand, slowing down your opponents.

Over half of your locations cost 2 or more, have you considered Refurbished Hulk?

You've got Wendamyr and 3 risen from the seas now, plus Aeron and dupes. That's a good amount of saves. I'd add Valar to your plot deck. With a lot of saves, it can easily hurt your opponent a lot more than you. Also, since you don't have a ton of draw, it might be worth considering Rule by Decree to hurt other players who outdraw you.

I'd think carefully about Building Season. While it can get you a location you might need, it also gives your opponent access to his/her best location. Does anything you have make it worth giving your opponent instant access to Lost Oasis, Lannisport Brothel, Toll Gate, Bear Island, etc.?

Winter Armada is really powerful, but given the prevalence of Martell Summer right now, I'd be worried about losing access to LIV and the Scouting Vessels if I couldn't keep it winter. Naval Escort doesn't have as powerful an effect, but it also doesn't have the liability. Plus it can combo with refurbished hulk if you didn't use it for location reduction, giving you the same net strength gain (+2 on 2 characters) using multiple Naval Escorts quickly pumps up all your characters.

Really, though, the build depends on your meta and what's being run in by your opponents. If you aren't facing a lot of strong locations, then building season will be a great play. Same with Winter Armada if you aren't facing a lot of summer.

Thanks for the feedback, gentlemen. It's helping me get more of an idea of what that deck should do. I don't yet own some of the cards (missing some characters) suggested but I do have enough to make some of the changes. The locations will definitely get some tweaks. Alannys will be added and definitely another Wex. I'll post the revised deck shortly.
