Picturing Sinophia

By Darth Smeg, in Dark Heresy

So I'm trying to get a feel for Sinophia Magna (from Damned Cities), and wondered what you all have in mind to better picture what the various districts might look like. Waterways and canals are prevalent, which makes me think of Venice.

Some fluff description from Damned Cities:

Brickwork sags; paving slabs are cracked and uneven; water spills out of cracks and runs down walls; rust and tarnish taint every piece of exposed metalwork. The city of Sinophia Magna is made of natural materials gone to rot, rust, or tarnish: plaster, wood, paint and (in the case of nobles) marble, stucco, and gilt, granting the city a universal smell of damp, decay, and mustiness. In poorer districts the stench of refuse, sewage, and stagnant water dominate, occasionally interspersed with the smells of bland, boiled food and scented narc-smoke. In more opulent surroundings, thick (often sickly) perfumes and incense are used to cloak the underlying reek.

...

The Sinks—so named because of the amount of dilapidation, flooding, and subsidence that has occurred there—are a virtually lawless maze of crumbling tenements, flooded hab- blocks, labyrinthine canals, bridges, shanties, and open sewers...

Could you see something like this, if you added a few layers of filth and rot, and changed the weather to grey and rainy?

or this?

Any artwork or imagery that might help paint the scenes would be greatly appreciated :)

Some excellent stuff there, just what I was looking for!

Anyone done anything with the undeveloped sectors of the city? Like Sector II or IX? (If I recall correctly)

And what, if any, Mechanicus presence is there?

While Sinophia seems like a lowish-tech imperial world, there are manufactoria abundant, and the nobles zip around in hover-cars. So there must be some cog-boys running around. Machine shrines? Availability of cybernetics? Various weaponry or other tech-tools? Vehicles?

I don´ think so. Sinophia´s Tech-Priesthship was mentioned in the CA in the "Tech-Witches of Ammicus Tole" article...as the reason why this maletek hereteks could ever become so widespread on Sinophia! Based on what is written there, Sinophia had become the "dumping ground" of the Adeptus Mechanicus. Tech-Priest who are suffering from Mind-rust or other unwanted personal is simply re-stationed their. " Who cares?"

Thereby, I fear that the Tech-Priest working the basement of the Arbites Station is a good example for half of the Priesthip or Mars present on the planet.
The otherhalf will simply be overworked and understuffe. ("The only thing I can do is work 24h a day. And my non-servitor menials are even not cabable off that, so I have to take care of the inferior task of keeping my servitor-menials running as well... sorry, please take a number and wait till you´ll be seen...")

What ever is around, I would have it in a shoddy state of repair/maintanance.....like everything else.

I imagine lots and lots of Reclimator Scum. Heretical jury-rigging is common place. With little AdMech oversight, Teknical creativity flourishes on a small scale while Hereteks with grander ambitions work unseen in the shadows. Only Nobility can afford the best Tech expertise and the toys that come with it. Perhaps they even employ and support Tech-Priests who have abandonded their duties to the Omnissiah. Having one in your employ is likely a sign of high Noble status.

That explains why the Logicians could prosper and secure financing for their experiments so easily on Sinophia.

It also makes the groups Techpriest a target for much attention. Hmmmmmm :)
