Horseback Hunters and Dragon Sight

By SummerSeaCaptain, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hi, I'm confused about the right sequence with dragon sight and the horseback hunters.
To put hh into play kneeling one influence I just have to be in a military challenge. Normally that qould mean that I declare military and then a minimum of one attacker. In this case, to put hh into play I need another attacking characters.

But if I have Dragon Sight, I declare military, my opponent declares the defender and then I can put HH into play without any other character, kneeling and attacking, is that right?
In this case, if I do not have any character with the military challenge icon, I cannot declare any military challenge....so I still need a standing military character, but then I'm not compulsed to attack with him to put HH into play.

Have I seen this right?

Thanks

In order to initiate a military challenge you need to 1) announce the military challenge and opponent who will be defending, and 2) declare at least one attacking character. Both of these things need to happen before the military challenge actually starts - and both things are part of the same framework action and thus nothing can be done between them in the timing structure.

When you add Dragon Sight to the mix, you make it so that in order to initiate a military challenge, three things must happen (in order); 1) you announce the military challenge and opponent who will be defending, 2) that opponent gets their one and only opportunity to declare defending characters, and 3) you declare at least one attacking character. All three of these things need to happen before the military challenge actually starts - and again, as part of the same framework action, nothing can be done between any of them in the timing structure.

So, the military challenge does not start until after you have declared - as you are required to do - a legal attacking character. This means it would not be legal to trigger the Horseback Archers' ability and put them into play in order for you to make them attackers. Until you have declared the attackers, the challenge duration required by their play restriction has not started. And anyway, there is no player action window between your opponent declaring their defenders via Dragon Sight and you declaring your attackers to complete the challenge initiation anyway. The Horseback Archers are still a "Challenges" effect and you cannot create a player action window in the middle of a framework action like initiating a challenge.

To summarize, Dragon Sight does not change the fact that you cannot initiate a military challenge with just Horseback Archers attacking because until you declare attackers, the challenge doesn't start - and there is no way to use a standard "Challenges" action in the middle of initiating a challenge, Dragon Sight or not.
