40k Diseases

By Shibby1431, in Dark Heresy

I'm currently trying to flesh out a character on a PbP game and was wondering if there's ever any mention of diseases throughout the Calixis Sector. I'm looking for a disease where if one were to catch it the chance of survival is low even with 40k technology/psyker healing. I'm not looking for anything that would cause a hive wide pandemic.

My character is a son of a cleric whose family died of a disease that he was spared getting. Seeing this as a sign of the god emperor he has joined the ecclisiarchy to find his true calling. Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

Papa Nurgle has plenty of other gifts for that cleric demonio.gif

Make up whatever kind of disease you want. 40k is a setting with a god of diseases, and one virus that lets its infected absorb and grow weapons and ammo . It will take a lot of effort to create one that doesn't fit.

Go with something with medieval associations: something with pox or black plague or bubonic plague. Black pox. The red sores. Weeping skin disease.

It should be contagious and horrific and yucky.

Hi Shibby,

as far as I understand, you are lucking "just for something fluffy".

it was among the first things that where listed as I searched for "deadly diseases"

If you have access to Warhammer Fantasy Setting, I distinctly remember getting lots of diseases in that game. Any disease found in WH Fantasy would have some decent crossover potentional with the DH system as both rules systems are very similar to each other.

This is exactly what I did. Furthermore, you can use some of the more God specific mutations in Tome of Corruption, as they are a lot more evocative, and fit nicely into DH with very little alteration.

I remember there was also a short story by Dan Abnett, I believe, about a very virulent plague. "Pestilence", it was titled, I seem to remember.

Diseases...

AUGE — This , coined by the Imperial Guard, covers a wide variety of diseases resultant from travel from planet to planet.

HIVEPOX — This general term refers to many diseases that can run rampant in the enclosed area of a hive.

LUNGROT — This disease, native to False Hope and other humid jungle worlds, progresively attacks the lungs and is typically fatal if not treated.

MEME-VIRUS — These diseases affect human and mechanical brains, compelling them to continuously collect information.

MURITAN CHOLETTIA — This disease is capable of wiping out entire ship crews if it spreads unchecked.

NURGLE'S ROT — This Warp-spawned disease combines the worst of every disease imaginable. It is incurable, and those that perish from it forfeit their souls to Nurgle, becoming Plague Bearers. The Rot takes several months to run its course, and the bearer can infect others during this time.

THALIOS FEAVER — This disease is capable of wiping out entire ship crews if it spreads unchecked.

UHLREN'S POX — A virulent and fatal disease

WHITE CHOKE — A spoor-borne wasting disease common to the underhives of many hive cities.

ZOMBIE PLAGUE — First seen in the Hydra Minoris system in 757M41, this mysterious disease causes the dead to return to some semblance of life, feeding upon and infecting the living.

There is a version of the Imperial Infantryman's Uplifting Primer that has been published and as I recall it may include medicael conditions and diseases commonly encountered by Guardsmen in the field.

It does - nothing that sounds like it would fit the bill, though. The few named illnesses, their real life pendant being a guess of mine as per their description in the primer, include Blood Worms (Trematodes), Phtisis (tuberculosis) and Skovy (scurvy). There's more, but the rest is all symptoms and not proper sicknesses in their own right.

To the OP, I would suggest simply coming up with an idea of your own. The Calixis Sector contains many planets, each with their own eco-system and an array of illnesses plagueing their populace. Whilst some may exist on every world, others would be limited to one, if only due to requiring a certain climate or other favorable conditions, and because the number of people travelling between the stars is comparatively low.

WFRP was mentioned as a potential source for inspiration, though, and I agree. It may well be worth a look.
