Melee Weapon Training (Primitive) and (Universal)

By moonbroth, in Rogue Trader Rules Questions

I couldn't find this in the errata. It comes in two parts. The first one's been thrashed out here before, but didn't get an "official" answer as far as I can tell. The second is related.

1) Should the Melee Weapon Training (Universal) talent incorporate Primitive weapons? The definition on p.103 excludes them, but that leads to three weird situations: a) "Universal" isn't; b) when the Rogue Trader switches off his Power Sword, he forgets how to use it; unless c) it has a Mono edge (and therefore isn't Primitive?).

Suggestion for next Errata: "Melee Weapon Training (Universal) includes the Primitive , Chain, Shock and Power groups."

2) If a character obtains the Melee Weapon Training (Primitive) talent (e.g. from Death World), and subsequently gets Melee Weapon Training (Universal) (e.g. from a Career Path), the (Primitive) version is redundant. Can he "trade in the redundant Talent for the Talented (choose one) Talent" as per the Skills and Talents: The Sequel box on p.15? That seems reasonable to me, but does depend on whether MWT(U) and MWT(P) overlap.

Cheers, Nick

1. Universal should contain Primitive. It effectively should mean all non exotic melee weapons.

2. To my knowledge, this does not fall under the category for being able to get a "Talented (X)" for redundancy. Partially as there is not such thing as Talented (Primitive weapons). If the player whined enough about it, I might, might , give an xp refund equal to the initial cost of MWT (primitive), or otherwise determine its value.

Thanks, KommissarK: I agree with you on 1), and think the "refund" you propose (get 200xp back when you upgrade from Primitive to Universal) is fair enough (although I don't have a problem with offering a freebie of Talented instead).

The issue otherwise is that a Death World Arch-Militant gets a Talent from his Origin Path which becomes redundant during character generation (when MWT Primitive from homeworld is incorporated in MWT Universal from his career, as we both agree), so otherwise he'd be losing out. There's nothing in Skills and Talents: The Sequel that requires the "Talented" Talent you pick to be related to your redundant Talent, IYSWIM.

Yepp RAW its two different things.

But if your RT ever switches off his power sword, he cant use it anymore. (Well at -20 but whatever).

Talk it over with your group. I wouldnt allow it to double, but i wouldnt penalize soemone if he has universal and only has a non power sword in his reach.
