Promo events and virtual promos

By Xenu's Paradox, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Remember the old special-rules promo events? Like Petals of the Rose? Remember the plots Opening Moves and Endgame? Ever wish FFG would bring those events back? Given the non-collectible nature of the game, handing out promos to players who attend tournaments is no longer kosher- but what about virtual promos?

Suppose there were a special OP event every so often, using special rules and special cards. These cards would be LEGAL PROXIES, printed out from FFG's website a la the GoT demo decks. The cards would be usable ONLY in the associated special events.

FFG would be free to create zany, unique effects without worrying about the cards impacting the metagame, since they'd never be available for Regionals/World Championships, nor any tournaments outside the special events. Casual play, as always, would be up to player consensus, nothing new there.

Who would be interested in something like this?

we definitely need SOMETHING like the old promo tournaments. They always created a huge buzz and were really well received.

Somehting like the Wildling deck or the circle of spies deck could be really really cool. How about an Arryn deck - since they aren't in the game? Or the old idea of a Mad king's deck, replete with Kingsgaurd (you'ld need a different arthur Dayne but we had a different Varys in the Circle deck - shoudln't be that big of a deal). Or an Others deck with CBKs and teh like?

The two things I've always considered to be worthwhile cards while sticking to the concept of the LCG:

Pre-release of the cards in the cycle. How about getting The Conclave 2 months before the CP releases. It wouldn't be legal for tournaments until the official release, but you'd have it to play with and show off.

Alternate-art. This made the ITE demo decks very popular. The card is still the same card as in the set, but it has the difference that makes it special. FFG could even just use foil writing technology to put "FFG Approved Play" or something similar on the card to make it stand out as a prize, and people would want to win them.

Playmats and pins and counters are fine, but after awhile people have all the ones they want, and then the appeal goes away.

+1 to JJ. This is how I feel 100%.

To the best of my recollection, the CoS deck ran 5 copies of Reign of Kings' Varys, and 5 Copies of I&F Varys.
