By Cartahk, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hi everyone,

I haven't bought the game yet, but I'm planning on doing so soon. I want to get the Road to Legends expansion, because I like the persistance that it brings to the game. What other expansions should I get to make the gaming experience as good as it can be? I heard Well of Darkness is a must have to go with RtL. What else should I be getting?

Thanks

The only two expansions you didn't already list are Altar of Despair and Tomb of Ice. I don't think a consensus has emerged regarding which of those is the better purchase; both are mostly compatible with RtL, though Tomb of Ice has one significant feature (feat cards) which currently has no rules for use in RtL.

Of course, if money is no object, you could just get both.

My recommendation would be that Well of Darkness and Tomb of Ice should be your first purchases.

The Well gives the OL a huge boost and the Tomb does the same for the players.

Altar is also good, but I would leave it at 3 after the above two.

I would only buy Road to Legend once you've played the game a bit and decided you want to devote the time to a campaign game.

I concurr. I would actually suggest skipping Altar of Despair, since IMO it has some of the most abusive stuff in the Descent-verse.

My group started off with just JitD, WoD, and RtL and got on smashingly (except for one particular rumor dungeon which is all AoD populated). We added AoD a few months ago, and found it to be ridiculous. That doesn't stop us from using it, but it has brought on a greater-than-average amount of rules arguments and abusive combinations (like the dreaded Gauntlets/Master Archer combo of doom)

ToI has been interesting. Lots of neat stuff for both sides, but that stealth die makes everybody want to throw things.
