French guys use this method to play easily online and find people easily to play. This create a sort of network for people connected only to play so you don't disturb friends pinging them everytime (for example in skype). Here's the instruction. Let's try if this system satisfy our needes. We are thinking about integrating player list on agotcards.org. Let's see first how it works. Thx to French Comunity for its help.

We use Wippien, a soft that combine a VPN (like Hamachi) and a chat like ICQ. So u can both create a game quickly and konw who is up to play with you...

How use it?

First you have to download it here: http://www.wippien.com/download.php

So you have an .exe, so install it.

During installation, you will arrive to something like this

Now you have to create a Jabber Account. No problem, you don't have to send any information,just choose a nickname (JID) and a password...

So check the box "i need new Jabber account"
Your acount will be somethign like [email protected]
just be sure to have this information
* Resource : Wippien IM3
* Server : wippien.com
* Port : 5222

Just click on "test account" to be sure you are the first to choose this nickname and then Ok... It's done, you have a Jabber account!

So now, if you have use a messenger software before, you know how it work. But you have no contact. To add some, click on the little green cross, choose "add/remove contact" and add the Jabber address on the first Blanck text box (exemple :[email protected]), nickname you want for the contact on the second and if you want to add him to a group, use the third text box. Then choose " add contact" and tat's done, you have your first contact!

Now how to play? Simple, find somebody inline that want to play (you can change your status by clicking on th ligne under your IP and writing something like "need opponent for AGOT" ), discuss a bit (open the chat windows by clicking on the name) and when you have to join the game, right-click on your contact on wippien, choose copy IP and paste it on the ip text box on Octgn. That's done.

Just be sure to create IPv4 game on OCTGN !

while this seems like an okay solution, and it's awesome that you guys are setting this up, it's definitely not as good as something like an IRC chat room -- as the number of players playing on OCTGN grow, the more work it is for someone to manually add each contact, and players will need to check the webpage list from time to time to add more new players (i know that each new player would ideally add each other player already on the list as contacts and then each of those older players would receive a contact notice, but for some reason i don't think it will work out this way especially as the number of players increases). it also becomes increasingly more work for someone to email each active contact on their list -- after all, whether the intention is for people to log in only when they're looking for a game, it won't work like that in principle because people tend to forget that they have such programs running in the background, or won't close it when they've already found a game, etc.

so is there no way we can get some kind of IRC-like chat room together for AGOT OCTGN players?

The problem is that IRC is not a VPN....

But yes it can be a solution, if you find something, i'm ready to try

As far as wippien is concerned, be careful opening up VPN connections to computers you don't know.

Concerning about using VPN programs is the same as Hamachi and lots of people use it. IRC is not immune to security problematic. Anyway this program mix VPN and chat so in our opinion is the best way to find an OCTNG2 network.

If someone forget to have it or doesn't change status while playing is not a problem of the "system" but of the player. Of course if someone is using an IRC channel (I wasn't even aware there was such a channel), can continue to use it of course. I feel more confortable with this system so if there are more possibilities to find people this can only be good for the game.

you are right Darksbane, potentially also using OCTGN2 can create risk on the system, also downloading torrent files, facebook etc. Personally I don't use even vpn programs, cause I directly opened my router 8088 port... and it is a far more risky solution, but If I have to fear the web I personally prefer to not use it at all.

Let's say in this way, if people are already using Hamachi, this is the same software so with him there are the same risks you have with hamachi. So If someone fears this it is better to play only "with paper cards".
