Is FFG dropping Talisman?

By lost.prophet, in Talisman

Hi guys, i saw something weird on the FFG facebook page : in the image section titled "boardgames" there are no Talisman pictures! It doesent sound good to me...

While I sure hope FFG is not dropping Talisman, that would explain why we're over halfway through May 2011 with still no hint of Talisman's future.

I hope that we get at least the 2 other region boards+ dragon tower

I don't like it if it is not complete... sad.gif

I doubt that is indicative of anything, unless they were there before and were pulled. FFG is currently in the process of reprinting the whole series. Unless it's a licensing issue with Games workshop, who I believe owns the rights, I see little reason for them not to continue developing and selling the game.

I don't believe FFG is dropping Talisman right now, with a whole lot of upcoming reprints. There surely was some kind of technical problem, since all expansions planned for this spring have been delayed or stopped for a long time (e.g. Arkham Horror revised CoTDP and Miskatonic Horror) and the same happened for other games.

What I do not understand is why we aren't getting any words, news, rumours, hype... nothing to wait for, nothing to give hope or raise some feeble interest and speculation, just silence. Arkham fans have seen their next expansions announced and are probably getting tired of waiting... but at least they know that they're waiting for something.

Hey, it's a game, it's not that I'm dying for a new expansion, but the purpose of these boards is to keep people informed and reasonably excited. FFG is openly ignoring Talisman fans since months. This forum is slowly getting deserted because there's nothing new to discuss.

As a final mockery today I saw that the Gear of War boardgame is ready for printing, after being on the "Concept Stage" since the first day when FFG took over Talisman, more than 2 1/2 years ago. As many said this was a kind of "lost cause", but since they have to "balance different game products" throughout the year they decided to invest in this new product (and they released a LOT of new games this year). Nobody was waiting for GoW right now and it's surprisingly ready and quite good-looking too; many Talisman fans are waiting for the next big box but this has not been announced yet and we're in May, which means 3 months after the usual schedule! I'm not saying it's bad because we don't have it right now. It's bad because we feel like we have nothing to wait for! Not to mention that the FAQ is about 2 years old now, I'm pretty tired to say this is not the case of many other games, that often do not require such a strong support like Talisman.

I got into FFG games because of Talisman. I discovered a lot of other great stuff and bought a bunch of their games with FULL expansions. But if they're going to rethink their involvement with Talisman, well, I'm done with FFG. They've already removed from catalogue all Warcraft products and the DOOM boardgame, which are among my favourites besides Talisman. I know there was a license issue with Blizzard and ID. I also know that Descent and Arkham are selling better, but I simply can't get my group into frequent playing with these games.

Sorry for the post, I've no intention to heaten the place or to raise a generalized criticism. FFG is not obliged to diverge information why they're releasing, delaying, re-scheduling or cancelling a game. But they're also not obliged to have a message board, a website and a Facebook page. If they decide to do things this way, they have to talk with their fans and keep them informed on a regular basis. If they fail to do that they'll lose fans and, most probably, customers.

Warlock, i'm with you. I'm italian, so i'm waiting for the sacred pool to be released next week and that keep me excited for now!

It seems that FFG is concentrating on titles with more appeal to the newbies, like LOTR or similar .. this silence is a very bad way to deal with all of the Talisman fans out there!

Curiously, I'm Italian too. This explains some mistakes in my above post, which I wrote in a rush after reading the Gears of War announcement, which had set me off. Sorry for any bad English fluff.

I'm always buying games in English because I prefer the original wording and I don't want to wait several months before playing an expansion, when English speaking people have already got tired of it. I can't say I've played a lot with Sacred Pool yet, but I'm worried about the tendency of FFG to put aside consolidated games and concentrate on new releases. The last 24 months featured Cadwallon CoT, Isla Dorada, Civilization, Mansions of Madness, Dust Tactics, Magnifico, Dragonheart, Dungeonquest, Costantinopolis and The Hobbit; next to come are Gears of War, Ventura, Blackgold and The Adventurers Pyramid of Horus.

A lot of new material to deal with, but I'm not here to buy all the new games they're releasing. These products are meant for others, people who don't prefer to expand the games they have but are looking for different options instead. If I feel they're delaying the expansions because they're in the urge of releasing new games and they're not telling me anything, I feel free to get tired of hoping and waiting.

I don't think they're dropping Talisman, at least for a while. Reprints must be sold before. I only hope they will complete the four corner regions before it happens. It will be a big delusion for me; consider I bought two copies of FFG Talisman releases so far. One copy to play and one copy to keep for my future children, because for me this is the best Talisman edition to date. FFG, please don't let me down.

I don't think they would drop this game, there is too much heritage behind it unlike other fad/niche games.

I sure hope they complete the board, for those of us who have supported the game since inception. I kind of think they owe us at least that much.

Please stop being naive.

8 months without news: FFG has dropped Talisman its pretty obvious.

I'm not sure of that, but i'm surely worried ; it's obvious that FFG is interested in producing card games or titles that got more economic potential/appeal to the most of the audience.

There is a lot of people excited about the release of Gears of War only because it has got that name.

Media tie ins are profitable, at least for a while. The help produce cash flow that can then be portioned for taking chances on other stuff. This is a model that publishing houses used to follow, though in recent years, with the absorption of imprints, they tend to isolate the tie-in imprints from the others. Media tie in profit no longer flows to the support of chance ventures of standalone products.

There's no telling if there is any parallel in the gaming industry. The point is that expansion into more tie-ins doesn't have a clear influence as yet.

FFG would never quit such a brilliant game, so stop scaring people.

Waitingtime is finally over.. Dragonlands expansion are just around the corner... happy.gif

Are you really that short sighted? China has been a growing power of outsourced production for the last 30 years. Get some real facts ... or better yet, stay on topic.

It's no good, I can't maneuver!
Stay on target.
We're too close!

my twopence worth

I'm a huge fan an regular talisman player.

I have every confidence in FFG to deliver. Seems like they have gone through a large expansion... or to re phrase that, a large growth spurt. to sustain that growth they need new customers and that means new games. new customers are not going to come into the FFG universe by buying middle set expansions of already established games.

Licences and game rights for such as gears of war and lord of the rings don't last forever they have to be renewed every 2 to 3 years or less.perhaps even on a yearly basis. so i expect they've thrown a lot of resources into those licences before they expire and need re-negotiating.

Art. the two new card games they've just produced are very art intense and i should imagine are taking art resources away from talisman at the moment. or it may be that age of runes card game may have art that will be re-used for some of the talisman cards.

It's possible that a team is working on both absent board regions simultaneously for game play purposes so that they can be released in quick succession. playtesting may also be a factor as the games get bigger more playtesting is required.

then consider printing, shipping, storage etc the recent new releases may have overloaded these facilities

Talisman will return...

Well, as recent history suggests, licenses are usually not renewed when they expire. Why should they renew them, to publish some more expansions that will attract a smaller target than the base game? It's very rare that a media tie-in game gets a large set of expansions because the cost of each single expansion is considerably higher due to copyrights. They publish the base game and then 1 max.2 expansions; then license expires. This happened to DOOM and all Warcraft games. It will be the same for the new games.

I have no doubt Talisman will return, but I'm not sure I will be so eager to dig into FFG games from now on, at least not as much as I did before. I was always excited by their announcements right on schedule, game support, after sales service, quantity and quality of the components. I see that recent games/expansions are getting more and more expensive with fewer components (not only Talisman expansions, but all FFG games) and I'm disappointed by the support given to this game (the official FAQ is stuck since May 2009, but I'm the only one who cares it seems). Now the schedule has been disattended. But what's really upsetting is the silence. No announcement, no discussion, no previews. Is there something in development or not? I don't want to know about a new expansion a month before it's released. We're fans, we need some anticipation, some flesh to bite. We've nothing now, only a series of OT threads.

That's why I'm pissed off, nothing else.

I had this feeling already a few month ago and it seems to be the bloody truth.

If there would be any shipping or technical problems they would still post some news.
But they don‘t even write a short ‘Hello fans!‘. It looks like they don‘t care about this 500 people in this forum.
Nowadays I guess we are about 20-30 people here. But this is a conclusion of their ‘no information‘ policy.

The whole situation is not very favorable for FFG. You don‘t sell 3 tires out of 4 when you want to drive a car.
And the explanation ‘You can use 2 tires to make a motorcycle...‘ is not what a driver wants to hear.
Even if they would release the rest of the corner expansions they already lost potential customers.
If they don‘t release any further expansion me and my friends will turn our back to FFG - further loose of customers.

I guess the only reason why they are not posting ‘We drop Talisman‘ is that they don‘t want to scare away buyers from the existing releases.
This seems logical and if it so... it‘s a f***ing b**ch move.

maybe we should write an email to FFG in the name of "Talisman fans community" and ask: "what is the official status of the game? We want to know. We have right to know!" :)

Totally agree with Battonsson. Count me in. I've been following the forums for quite a while now, it was really helpful and friendly, especially about all the rules questions. I've never registered until now, but all those stories about FFG dropping the Talisman project are getting annoying and i wanted to throw my opinion aswell...

I really enjoy playing this game and im a huge fan since the first editions (think i played the first time when i was around 7 yo...). I'm 26 now. I was very excited when i found out the release of a 4th edition, with a new revamped graphic, miniatures and the projects of new stuff!

I just cant believe now it doesnt worth to print a couple of more expansion or it would represents a so big loss for FFG! They even invented those kinda poor and expensive (compared to the big boxes) mini-expansions to improve selling with the least efforts. But we bought them anyway cause an expansion is always welcome for a fan, especially new characters and some new mechanics for a change.

I'm even fine to play with the actual contents but sounds like a joke to print all this stuff just to stop now. Printing the Forest and the City will "complete" the game in some sort, atleast aesthetically speaking. Even in a distant future i believe it is very probable for a new customer, recently introduced to talisman, the willing of completing the game with buying the whole expansions set, especially the board expansions.

So in the end I can't and don't want to believe they're dropping the game. It's pointless at my eyes.

I could understand a moderate delay but this shouldn't stop us from obtaining a sincere answer, some courtesy and policy.

We'r not asking that much after all...

Sincerely regards to all the talisman community. happy.gif

Federico.

I think that FFG is very busy at this moment.

They don't have time to listen to the fans here.

But of course, they care about the fans. we are the buyers!

As soon as FFG knows something about the upcoming expansion, then they will post it on their site.

But i agree that it would be nice if FFG will say something to the fans here, because talisman is not on schedule at this moment.

I don't think that it is fair to say something like that.
We have no proof about this.
Let's hope for now that we get at least the 2 other corners.

I seriously doubt that FFG will ever drop talisman, until it´s impossible to add more stuff to the game ( that would be never ). We just have to patient i think. Who knows! maybe they will announce the next expansion next week, just as we all thought FFG had forgot all about the greatest game ever made. I´m pretty sure they know we all just sit and wait for that new expansion, and when they announce it, the forum will explode.

Best regards

Maybe they announce something after the UK games expo 2011...
