Greyjoy- Possible to build a competetive deck with only Kings of the Sea?

By Ephraim2, in 4. AGoT Deck Construction

Thx for taking a minute to read my post. I just started back into Thrones after a lo0ong absence. I picked up the core set and Kings of the Sea.

I've looked at several of the Greyjoy decklists posted and the Greyjoy expansion seems to make up a good portion of them. I guess my question is:

Can a competitive deck be made with only that expansion and the core? I've got a few thoughts about my deck but I'm not sure if Im totally offbase with my strategy and deck build. A few of the other expansions had a "deck build" enclosed to help out. Greyjoy doesn't.

Any ideas or comments about where to go in terms of builds, deck strategy, or even what current packs I should focus on trying to get would be a big help. Ive seen mention of mill decks and stealth/intimidation decks for Greyjoy, and think I should mainly focus on a stealth/inimidation deck. The only mechanics involving "milling" seems to be the Drowned Deciple.- so it may be too little to really help.

I apologize if this has been asked before. I looked back a bit, but since the Greyjoy expansion is a reprint, anything really helpful is buried.

It depends on your definition of competitive. If you mean a deck you could win a major tourney with, that's unlikely. If you meant a deck that has a chance to win games - you should be able to - but there aren't all that many chapter packs you'd need to buy to really shore up your GJ card pool. The Brotherhood Without Banners cycle has a lot of Greyjoy cards - here are some specific chapter packs I would recommend looking at:

I think A Song of SIlence is a must-have. Euron is amazing and it has 4 other Greyjoy cards and a very good plot card.

I really like Fishing Net a lot so I'd heartily recommend picking up A Song of Summer.

Refugees of War is very good for the Refugees and Alannys.

Tales from the Red Keep offers Distinguished Boatswain who is a very undercosted character as long as your opponent doesn't have cards in shadows.

Ancient Enemies is nice for the Fury plot card, Greyjoy's is one of the better ones and they are one of the houses least affected by the restricted list.

You could pick all these up for around $40 on Coolstuffinc.com. I only mentioned the packs that I felt like had the most bang for the buck.

With just the Kings of the Sea alone I find that there's not many worthwhile non-unique characters to include. That's the biggest reason I would suggest picking up a few chapter packs.

Playable? Yes. Competitive? No.

This thread bugged out for me, keeps being marked as unread, and it's driving me nuts. Hope this reply fixes this.

Edit: Success!

Stasis above gives good recommendations. I'd like to add The Winds of Winter and A Change of Seasons. Winter is possibly their best build right now, nad these two packs have the cards needed to make it work.
