QoD Hatchlings

Can you play the hatchlings as dupes on their respective dragons straight from your hand? or must you bring them out of shadows?

Like an other passive character ability, the "dupe the dragon" ability on the Hatchlings is not active in your hand since it doesn't say it is. As such, you need to put it into play, where it's ability will be active and turn it into a dupe.

For these Hatchlings, that will usually mean bringing them out of Shadows - unless you come up with some other "put into play" effect for them.

****. I thought so. just making sure. more wishful thinking than anything. lol

What about this scenario: You have a hatchling (lets say the green one) already in play, during challenges you use Ambush from the Plains to put Rhaegal into play and consequently your hatchling attaches to him. At the end of the phase, can you discard the hatchling to save Rhaegal from going back to your hand? Or since it's an end of phase effect, is there no response window for you to do this?

No Responses - including saves and cancels - can be played during the "end of phase" framework window. So you cannot use the dupe. Rhaegal will return to your hand and the Hatchling/dupe will be discarded.
