FFG's Minnesota Cthulhu Regional

By Hastur, in CoC General Discussion

I just wanted to thank FFG for hosting a regional at their Game Center. It was a lot of fun (though the drive home ended up taking over 13 hours- BRUTAL!) It was nice to see the Game Center in person- it is a beautiful space with a wide variety of games for purchase.

Damon- it was great to meet you in person and get a better perspective on who you are and what you bring to the design/development table. I enjoyed picking your brain and getting some insight into what the future holds for Cthulhu. It was also fun playing Pickamino with you- beware the fickle, fickle worms!

Steve, Nate, Jaffer, Lucas, Will, and James- always good to see you guys again and say hello. Hope to see all of you at GenCon.

I wish more people had come to the event for Cthulhu- we had a grand total of four for the Conspiracy tournament and three for the Regional (don't know about the Cube Draft, as I was heading home before it even started on Sunday.)

Thanks to Evan and Patrick for showing up and providing some good games.

And a special thanks to Jeff, my traveling companion, for sharing the driving and some pleasant conversation. Sorry those mirror matches were so unkind to you.

I ended up winning the Regional with a mono-Cthulhu deck.

Congrats happy.gif I, for one, would be curious to see your mono-Cthulhu deck list!

I would love to see the decklist and tournament report as well! Would anyone else be interested in sharing? Also, Hastur, would you email me at [email protected]? I have an idea that I'd like to run past you.

Also, yes, it was great to see some Cthulhu-ers (Cthulites? What should the term be?) I was all wrapped up in AGoT most of the weekend (won Melee and came up 3 points short of the Overall Championship) but it's always good to chat. And I actually got quite a few games of Cthulhu in over the weekend. It's just that they were side games against on of my AGoT meta mates that's getting in. Maybe we'll get a full CoC meta down here too. Anyway, the Cthulhu draft was underway just as we needed to hit the road back to Missouri, but it looked like they had 4 or 5. Which is a bummer. Not only do I love draft in general, but a draft is the only GenCon Cthulhu event that I've got under my belt so far. It looked like it would be a great deal of fun.

As you've probably seen I'm a new player, I was at LCG days for aGoT and I'm kinda bummed I wasn't able to get in any games with or pick the brains of some of you seemingly fine gentlemen. Gencon perhaps.

It was great playing against you and Jeff as well, Jim.

Perhaps the local scene won't be so sparse the next time you both make the trip back up.

I am pretty sure Jim would agree that the decklist could best be described as:

  1. Take all the good cards in Cthulhu
  2. Multiply by 3
  3. Shuffle
  4. ?
  5. PROFIT!

Unfortunately, this isn't a whole lot of exaggeration.

I brought Mono-Yog Mill and only won 1 out of the 5 games I played. Cthulhu was just too fast for my deck in 3 of those games.

I figured that would be about what a mono-Cthulhu deck would be. Jennifer runs a mono-Cthulhu deck that has gotten more vicious recently.

Also Patrick, I really like your Yog Mill deck. It is far superior to my Yog/ST Mill deck, solely because everything took too long to play in that deck. Going to post a deck list for what I would've tried to run this year (and no, there's no Agency or Hastur this time gui%C3%B1o.gif ) on the Deck forums.

The Cthulhu faction got some great cards in the last cycle.

It's pretty easy now to get Cthulhu out in the early game.

I second all that Hastur had to say about the LCG Days experience.

We thuroughly enjoyed our games with and the company of the local

Minnesota players. If Patrick and Evan are indicative of what the local meta

has to offer I certainly hope to see more of you turn out if we are able to return next year.

You guys made the long drive totally worth it! Meeting Damon Stone (Designer/Developer - Call of Cthulhu LCG)

was a complete pleasure and I am very glad we were able to spend so much time getting to know him better and

discussing the bright future of the game. After the low turnout for this event in it's first two years I still have reason

to hope that with further support the local meta will grow and 2012 will see much greater participation.

With that purpose in mind I feel compelled to mention that the 'Design a Card' event was a fantastic opportunity

for a Cthulhu Mythos fan and Call of Cthulhu Card Game player! This alone was nearly worth the 24+ hrs of driving!

We had the privilege to sit down with Damon Stone and Nate French to literally design a card for the future of the game.

We were thrilled with the initial concept and we hope the final result will encourage the community to participate in

future events of this kind. Kennon , the greatest disappointment of the weekend was missing the opportunity to

get a few games in with you. It seems we are forever scheduled to prevent this from happening! I assure you that

at GenCon this cycle will be broken. I hope your design session was productive?

Thanks again FFG and we'll see you at Cthulhu Worlds!

I am glad to hear the design seminar went well. I am very sorry to have missed that.

*grumbles about stupid horses and the crap I have to go through for them*

Did it end up happening later on that saturday, or did they just go ahead and keep to the sunday schedule?

Because of such low turnout and because both Nate and Damon were available

at the time the design seminar happened Saturday evening.

I was told this is the deck:
Character

Cthulhu (Core) x3
Cthulhu (TWB) x3
Carl Stanford (SoA) x3
Beings of Ib (TH) x3
Degenerate Serpent Cultist (TWB) x3
Brood of Yig (WitD) x6
Keeper of the Golden Path (Core) x3
Nyarlathotep (JtUK) x1
Dreamlands Fanatic (ItDoN) x3
Seeker of Mysteries (SoA) x3
Princess Zura (SotD) x2
Descendant of Eibon (TTotT) x1

Support
Guardian Pillar (SftSK) x1

Event
Deep One Assault (Core) x3
Pulled Under (Core) x3
Sacrificial Offerings (Core) x3
In an Unmarked Grave (SotD) x3
Underneath the Surface (TTB) x3

I would suggest that you check your sources again :)

Very true. The decklist you posted would be illegal as it has two cards from the restricted list on it. Not to mention 6 copies of Cthulhu.

I have been asked to write a tourney report about the event, in which I will likely include my decklist for the regional and the conspiracy tournament- if not, I will post them on here at a later time.

You can wait to post it until after June 4th if you like... gui%C3%B1o.gif

Well, since I'm not sure if my tourney report died in editing, I will share my decklist here:

Characters (33):
2 * Carl Stanford, Deathless Fanatic
2 * Yig, Father of Serpents
2 * Hydra, Mother of the Deep
2 * Cthulhu, Lord of R’lyeh
3 Descendant of Eibon, Master of the Black Arts
3 Ravager from the Deep
2 Keeper of the Golden Path
2 Deep One Rising
2 Emerging Deep One
3 Degenerate Serpent Cultist
2 Guardian Shoggoth
3 Dreamlands Fanatic
3 Brood of Yig
2 Nocturnal Scavenger

Events (13):
3 Pulled Under
3 Deep One Assault
3 Sacrificial Offerings
2 In an Unmarked Grave
2 Feeding Frenzy

Support (8):
2 Snow Graves
2 Y’ha-nthlei Statue
2 Called by Azathoth
2 Sword of Y’ha-tallo

There’s no subtlety here: run at stories and destroy anything that gets in your way.
