Core Set necessary?

Sorry if this has been asked already (I am sure it was). I spent a while searching the forum but didn't find what I was looking for.

I read the thread on recommendations for new players and how to approach the issue that there is a vast number of expansions / chapter packs. Everyone reccomends to buy the core set and then some expansions that deliver the cards wished for. I was wondering, though, is it really necessary to have the core set?

I can download the manual from the ffg site, but is there anything other really necessary? Or would it be possible to directly buy one of the deluxe expansions that treats the house I am most interested in (e.g. Lords of Winter) and a couple of chapter packs and then just a build one deck and start playing with a friend that did the same?

Is it possible to do that, yes, however the core set comes with cards that are very good so the normal recommendation is that you buy 2 core sets before you buy any other chapter packs or expansions. In addition the tokens and title cards come in the core set which are helpful too.
