My group and I seem to be having a bit of trouble filling out our character sheets. On the sheet you have basic and advanced skills, next to each skill is a set of 3 blocks. The first block is labeled "skilled" the second block labeled "+10" and the third labeled '+20". Now the problem we are having is whether or not you fill out the first block for ALL the basic skills, or simply the ones you have more skill in. So when you get your starting basic skills you're only intended to fill in blocks based on whether or not you have gained through experience points more in a certain skill. So one would NOT fill in the first "skilled" block for every basic skill when starting a character for Dark Heresy, correct?
Filling out the character sheet
Hi Arch-Militant Bron Thale.
There are certain basic skills that everyone gets, and they are already listed as basic skills on most versions of the character sheet that I have seen . Sometimes background packages, homeworlds etc allow you to have some knowledge of a skill that normally requires training. I write these in the same column as the rest of the basic skills which makes keeping track of it all very easy.
You do not tick the 'skilled' box for basic skills, that gets ticked when the skill becomes a trainined skill. For example, my Feral World Assassin has Survival as a basic skill meaning he knows a bit about it from his upbringing. I write it on the list of basic skills to show I have it as a basic skill and when I make a test I make it at half the attribute.
If I later spend XP * to get it as a trained skill, I tick the 'skilled' box to indicate that I now have it as a trained skill, and I make the test at the full attribute. I think the '+10' and '+20' boxes after that are self explanatory.
An example for the basic skills that are common to all characters is that most people can kind of swim, so they have swim as a basic skill and they make the test at half. Some people are 'skilled' because they have training. Mark it as skilled on the sheet and make the check at full attribute.
I hope that clears things up, I apologise if my explanation has included how to suck eggs.

* Rant: 200 XP to take survival from a basic skill to a trained skill even though my character is a feral worlder?!? That's why I haven't bought it yet and probably won't (handwaves the character background). There's a cleric alternative rank that gets it for free, WTF? How would a missionary who grew up somewhere else know more about survival than a feral worlder? Power creep perhaps.
